The Role:This is the first level in the Service Worker series.
The Service Worker (Parks Irrigation) performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility.
The ideal candidate for the role will have one year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.Benefits:

Regular status position's offer:
* The City of Glendale observes 10.5 holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays.
* Vacation leave accrues at 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours per year), and increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years, and to 7.6 hours after 10 years of service.
* Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours per year).
Retirement:
* This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
* Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12.29%.
* Performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work, plumbing, landscaping, and repair of specialized equipment.
* Operates various light, medium, and heavy equipment including trucks, truck with trailers.
* May provide general direction to other employees and volunteers.
* Uses various hand and power tools to accomplish tasks.
* Explains and enforces rules and regulations pertaining to safety, barricading and operation of equipment.
* Notifies residents and businesses of work being performed; answers questions from citizens.
* Maintains daily work records; may perform some computerized data entry work.
* Transports and sets up supplies and equipment; makes required safety checks.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
Parks:
* Maintains parks, right-of-ways, parking lots, and bike paths (irrigation systems).
* Maintains and adjusts sprinkler systems, provides irrigation services, maintains irrigation equipment.
* Inspects, operates, and maintains sprinkler and drip irrigation systems and performs preventative maintenance and repairs as needed.
Services, repairs, and maintains various mechanical parts and equipment of various parks, trails, facilities, and sport complexes.
Monitors and ensures all irrigation equipment always remains operational.
* Responds to and resolves citizen complaints pertaining to parks facilities.
* Explains and enforces park policies and regulations to park patrons.
* Maintains high visibility to dissuade vandalism and crime in parks facilities.
* Ensures that reserved facilities are maintained in a safe, clean condition; checks for permits.
* Provides assistance in emergency situations; calls for police or medical assistance.
One year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.
Knowledge of:
* Rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to area of assignment
* Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned areas of responsibility
* Hazard, safety rules, precautions related to equipment operation
* Traffic laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as they relate to equipment operation
* Street layouts and routes
* Confined space entry procedures.
Ability to:
* Read and understand blue prints, technical diagrams, and maps
* Barricade work sites according to the Phoenix barricade manual
* Understand and follow safe working practices
* Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
* Deal courteously with the public
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and citizens
* Operate and perform maintenance and minor repair on light, medium, and heavy equipment
* Perform general maintenance and service requirements of equipment in area of responsibility
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work independently
* Accurately and timely complete reports and logs; record daily work activities and enter and retrieve information on computers
* Identify paint coatings for material and color matching
* Operate and understand atmospheric sensing devices.
* Maintain the appropriate state of Arizona driver license with relevant endorsements.
* Special Requirements
Depending upon area of assignment applicants will be required to undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment and will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy.
Valid Arizona class D driver license
May be subject to call back, stand-by duty, and evening, weekend and rotating shifts.

Enters, exits, and operates city vehicles; depending on area of assignment, may enter, exit, and operate vehicles which require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Exposure to heavy traffic, weather extremes; hazardous materials, dust, insects and gases.
