The University of California, Davis has conducted continuous monitoring of Lake Tahoe since 1968, amassing a unique record of change for one of the world's most beautiful and vulnerable lakes. The long-term data set collected on the Lake Tahoe freshwater ecosystem by UC Davis and its research collaborators is an invaluable tool for understanding ecosystem function and change over time.
The TERC Field Team Program Assistant will aid the field team by helping to prepare field equipment for daily monitoring activities, conducting field work for long-term monitoring efforts, participating in daily cleanup after field activities, conducting lab work and data entry associated with long-term monitoring projects, participating in training related to field efforts and/or safety, writing articles for the TERC newsletter regarding field activities, and aiding the Education Team in public outreach.
Tasks will include some of the following activities:Enhance team capacity by preparing field equipment for daily research and analysis (e.g., wash and label bottles for sample collection, prepare sampling equipment, assist in the maintenance and calibration of field instrumentation).Conduct boat and land-based field activities on and around Lake Tahoe and/or other bodies of water within California.Support field equipment maintenance in the Tahoe City Field Station by cleaning and organizing gear after field activities.Implement high-quality data collection and analysis: enter data utilizing ESRI platforms (ArcGIS, Field Maps, Survey123, etc.), create maps, and organize spatial data collected during monitoring field work.Develop science communication skills by documenting field activities and writing short articles regarding work that the field team is participating in for a quarterly newsletter.Participate in trainings such as the Motorboat Operator Training Course and/or Wilderness First Aid to earn professional certifications.Develop broad outreach skills by aiding the Education Team in public outreach activities with schools, families, and community members.Communications Outreach and Education Associate Sierra Nevada Alliance – Remote Tahoe Area or South Lake Tahoe Office Organizational Background: This AmeriCorps position will be hosted by the Sierra Nevada Alliance and will serve to unite people and organizations to protect Sierra Nevada ecosystems and communities.
Position Description: The Outreach & Education Associate will build regional capacity with the Development & Community Engagement Director by:
Improving Alliance messaging by examining the organization's existing outward-facing media and analyzing its effectiveness.Creating and implementing a plan for improving engagement with Alliance conservation events and messaging.Co-creating and implementing the Alliance's outward conservation messaging via social media, website management, e-newsletters, and e-blasts.Building connections with stakeholders by serving as the Alliance representative on various committees.Desired Qualifications: Experience creating and managing outreach efforts at an environmental and/or nonprofit organization.Strong written and visual communication skills.Ability (or willingness to learn) to develop a long-term communications strategy.A passion for using visual and written storytelling to engage an audience's interest in programs that protect the environment.Strong people skills, including the ability to run and organize meetings and events with a team.Interest in creating and planning unique and engaging events that support building a conservation community.Site-Specific Training Provided: On-the-job training will be provided to ensure that the member is comfortable with the job duties. Professional development training will be provided through the AmeriCorps program.
Things to Note: This position requires a significant amount of office and desk work. The applicant must be organized, detail-oriented, flexible, and open to feedback. The position will serve from home primarily and must be comfortable working with minimal supervision.
