Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is recruiting a Simulations Operations Specialist. The Simulation Center provides simulation-based education and training services to all programs within WMed, as well as to community physicians, nurses, pre-hospital providers, allied health, and other healthcare providers in southwest Michigan.
Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the Simulation Operations Specialist works beside the Simulation Coordinator and is co-responsible for the day-to-day routine and implementation of simulation activities, including:
Assisting Simulation Operations Manager in all aspects of operations Monitoring inventory and allocating specific equipment and supplies used in simulation events Working with vendors to resolve issues in supply and equipment Assisting Simulation Operations Manager with acquiring, programming, troubleshooting, and operating task trainers, high fidelity mannequins, classroom audio-visual equipment, and room video-recording systems during simulation events General Exhibits a commitment to the values expressed in the WMed mission, vision, and values. Supports the short, intermediate, and long-term educational and research goals of the Simulation Center. Maintains certification as an AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider. Assures regulatory compliance with Simulation Center activities. Maintains the confidentiality of all patient, employee, student, physician, and institutional-related information. Meet deadlines and standards for quality and accuracy. Prioritizes and organizes workflow. Maintains a basic level of knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy, physiology, and clinical applications. Understands principles of adult learning. Assists in collecting utilization and equipment inventory data. Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects. Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions. All other duties as assigned. Inventory Operations and Backup Support Organize the placement of equipment and supplies in storerooms at Upjohn and Borgess Simulation Center locations. Create sign-out sheets and other quick record keeping methods during events. Works with WMed Accounting to locate equipment and supplies for audit procedures and runs audit reports from WASP inventory Database. Develops inventory control procedures to monitor supply levels, allocate costs accurately, and ensures supplies are available when needed. Assists in researching equipment and supply vendors, obtaining bids, and acquiring and upgrading simulation equipment and supplies.
Technical Operations Understands the use and operation of different simulation technologies and educational software used in the Simulation Center, ranging from screen-based simulations to full body patient simulators and virtual reality surgical simulators. Able to train learners using simulation technologies and educational software used in the Simulation Center. Prepares the facility, mannequins, audiovisual systems, and equipment for training sessions; packs up materials and shuts down equipment after the session. Performs videotape recording, duplication, mixing, and editing. Assists with the operation of the simulators during training sessions. Assists with facility improvements and new equipment deployment. Monitors equipment performance, safety, and certification. Maintains and troubleshoots problems with simulators, the audiovisual system, and support equipment. Serves as a point of contact and interfaces with equipment manufacturers to maintain functionality, repair equipment, and fix system problems; maintains a record of repairs. Attends conferences periodically to stay current with simulation technology. Training Provides training and certification in the use and maintenance of the simulation equipment for those who will use the equipment unsupervised. Assists in the acquisition of technical knowledge of simulator and medical device, operation, and procedures among instructors to ensure that curricula are accurate and appropriate. Provides training and technical support for the computer-based recording system. Demonstrates, teaches, and supports the technical aspects of operating simulators to faculty and others. Acts as a technical expert in simulation and provides lectures and demonstrations at professional associations. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: The Simulation Operations Specialist must have a certificate, degree or equivalent work experience in the healthcare, computing, or education field (EMT, paramedic, nurse, or medical technician certificate; or associate's or bachelor's degree in a healthcare, computing, or education field). Experience with medical simulation and/or computer-based instruction and e-learning is highly desirable. Experience of 6 months or more in event support and knowledge of simulation supplies and inventory locations at WMed Simulation Center is preferred. Working knowledge of WMed Accounting purchasing process is preferred. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS: Certified or obtain certification as an AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider within 6 months of hire. Obtain Laerdal Preventative Maintenance Certification within 1 year of hire. Obtain CHSOS certification within 1 year of hire. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Proficiency in PC and Mac-based computer software applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access). Ability to conduct an Internet search for information. Strong analytical, interpretive, problem-solving and project management skills. Strong English communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills. Self-motivation and willingness to learn new skills. Ability to work under pressure and reliably meet deadlines. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision. Ability to carry out responsibilities in a timely and careful manner. Ability to work effectively in a team environment with healthcare professionals. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding job assignments and sensitive issues. Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow. Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
