Who we are looking for:

Are you passionate about making a difference in cancer care and medicine? If so, this is the role for you! We are seeking a passionate Specialist, State Advocacy to work with our dynamic state advocacy team. This role offers the opportunity to be part of our mission to advance ASCO's advocacy priorities at the state level. Don't miss this opportunity to contribute to meaningful advocacy efforts in cancer care and make an impact! This position is hybrid, with a primary location in Alexandria, VA.
Responsibilities
Work with the state advocacy team to develop and implement state advocacy strategies.
Research, analyze, and track state legislation and regulations relating to cancer care and the practice of medicine.
Draft letters, testimony, and other materials for state legislative and regulatory purposes and coordinate submission with State Affiliates.
Actively participate in state-based coalition strategy discussions and develop relationships with counterparts at physician and cancer community organizations.
Identify opportunities to increase State Affiliate activity and ASCO's visibility in state advocacy, including through testimony and meetings with state policymakers.
Work with the policy communications team to seek opportunities for ASCO to engage in media efforts on state issues, such as press event participation, social media, press releases, and op-eds.
Coordinate with the Grassroots Advocacy Specialist to draft and share state level grassroots alerts.
Serve as a state advocacy resource for State Affiliates, ASCO committees, and others.
Travel to and participate in state affiliate meetings and lobby days.
Attend conferences and represent ASCO's state advocacy program externally.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
4+ years of related work experience with demonstrated knowledge of and experience with state-level advocacy initiatives at a professional association; engagement with state chapters a plus.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and various internet browsers and search engines and familiarity with legislative and regulatory search programs and engines.

Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with ability to make decisions with sound judgement.
Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills with a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
Self-managed with excellent time management skills and proven ability to meet deadlines, prioritize, and multi-task.
Excellent organizational skills with high attention to detail.
Work Environment
Hybrid work location based out of the Alexandria, VA office.
