About the role
As a Senior Underwriting Consultant, you will classify mortality risks in a sound, objective and consistent manner by applying company guidelines and philosophies with consideration for company profitability and marketplace needs. Advanced medical and financial underwriting ability and product knowledge is required along with an in-depth understanding of Symetra and life insurance industry practices. Handling and approval authority expectations are for up to $10,000,000 or based upon management discretion.
What you'll do in this role
BGA focused. Review individual life insurance applications and underwrite standard and substandard risks within authorized limits of authority in accordance with department guidelines, including
Determining whether to accept, reject or modify life insurance risks by evaluation of applicant's medical history, financial background, insurable interest and financial need.
Conferring with other Consultant-level Underwriters, Medical Director, Director of Indv Underwriting and/or Chief Underwriter on complex cases and situations not established by practice. Obtaining second signature on cases that exceed designated underwriting authority.
Meeting established time service standards. Serve as a role model for other underwriters by establishing themselves as underwriting experts and as a "go to" person for underwriting issues; and Designee to handle high-visibility/high face amount or otherwise special cases.
Communicate and negotiate effectively with BGA's, wholesalers, agents and producers to explain adverse underwriting decisions, while maintaining agency relationship and encouraging future business.
Travel with field reps.
Develop and lead agent seminars on underwriting topics.
Act as a mentor to other underwriters through, training, consulting, and reviewing business that exceed their authority level. • Audit underwriters on case performance and MIB coding.
Assist in underwriter training.
Other duties/projects as assigned. • Actively seek out/identify resources and projects to improve underwriting staff and improve understanding of business line within the company and industry.
Represent the underwriting function in intra-departmental meetings/projects.
Represent department Director and/or Symetra internally and at external events and functions as appropriate.

Compensation
Salary Range: $ 100,300- $167,100 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Work requires in-depth knowledge of the field as well as the ability to evaluate external factors and impact to strategic goals.
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent education and experience.
