Job Description Summary As a part of GE Aviation's groundbreaking, collaborative Additive Integrated Product Team, you will use your materials expertise and program management skills to partner with manufacturing, sourcing, and quality engineers to support the growth in additive production rates while maintaining and improving quality standards, in support of our commercial and military aviation products. These critical technologies include DMLM (Direct Metal Laser Melting) and other additive modalities in several alloys including Titanium, Aluminum, Nickel, and Cobalt-based alloys. Job Description Essential Functions / Responsibilities: Responsibilities in this role may include but would not be limited to:
Partner with design engineering, Supply Chain, and GE Additive to develop and improve additive manufacturing processes in order to advance design technology, reduce part cost and maintain or improve part quality. Lead collaborative cross-functional teams and execute technical projects & programs required to reduce technical risk associated with new additive manufacturing methods, building and leveraging significant domain expertise in the additive field. Influence standard work for quality assurance through ownership and/or authorship of key specifications controlling powder, printed castings, and finished part standards; drive efficiency in processes and update additive specifications as needed Design and conduct studies to characterize the impact of variation within manufacturing process windows, and use results to recommend updates to specifications, technical plans, and standard work instructions Lead and/or support efforts to better understand powder metallurgy's impact on product quality, including reuse and contamination studies. Help strategize the approach for additive powder scale-up/delivery moving forward for the IPT and build out powder knowledge/depth within the additive materials EMS team. Lead or support efforts to ensure part quality with a reduced reliance on physical testing and an increased reliance on non-destructive methods including but not limited to in-process monitoring approaches and/or other standardized methods Consult with GE Additive on machine/parameter development efforts Use the TRL/MRL process where appropriate to drive technical rigor Provide MAE (Materials Application Engineering) support for parts under development that utilize additive manufacturing Make cross-product linkages, leveraging additive expertise to provide insights on current and potential additive components Proactively identify lessons learned and best practices and ensure appropriate documentation Provide consultation and share expertise with colleagues also developing additive technologies Communicate significant developments with leadership and consult on technical roadmap development Lead/support root cause investigations and corrective action implementation Additional responsibilities for strong candidate: Demonstrate expertise and skills in metallic material modeling, both physics-based and analytics; continue building depth. Advance the Technical Readiness Level of models that have been identified as key to the overall modeling strategy for the department. In this role, you will gain or build: Systems thinking through the broader integration of design, materials science, manufacturing, and quality. Technical understanding of GE's most advanced manufacturing technology Cross-division and cross-business collaboration leadership skills Qualifications/Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science or closely related Engineering field from an accredited college or university (or high school diploma/GED with 6 years' experience in disciplinary engineering and science). Minimum of 5 years of experience in a materials science engineering position US Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance Desired Characteristics: 10 years of experience in materials science, with at least 7 years of industry experience in addition to any academic experience Experience with additively manufactured materials, particularly DMLM Experience with titanium and/or aluminum-based aerospace alloys Experience with nickel and/or cobalt-based aerospace alloys Advanced degree in Materials Science or related Engineering field from an accredited college or university Strong oral and written communication skills Strong interpersonal and leadership skills Ability to guide and influence others, especially those not in a direct reporting position. This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology.
