Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era in micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler (MC) technology. The MC enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. The MC promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing both for the many device classes that never could be made by semiconductor methods but also to open up entirely new classes. Furthermore, the MC is fully digital in the way 3D printing is digital, but where 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the MC is a multi-process, multi-material technology: bits and raw materials go in and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler – that we will be unveiling to the world soon.
Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.
About the role: We are seeking an experienced Robotics Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing team in either our Berkeley or Santa Clara office. This role will contribute to the foundational design of our novel robotic manufacturing platform by developing significant subsystems responsible for the precision manipulation of microscopic parts and assemblies. You will gain multidisciplinary experience across mechanical design, electrical engineering, vision, robotics controls, and manufacturing engineering while working as a part of a fast-paced cross functional team in an early startup.
\n What you'll do:Own and lead development and delivery of a complex robotic manufacturing subsystem.Work cross-functionally on complex sub-systems of our automated fabrication platform incorporating technologies such as physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, micro-fluidics, material handling, laser micromachining, lamination, conveyance systems, and more.Drive your work to completion with fabrication and assembly efforts leveraging our in-house lab and machine shop.Work in a cross-functional team of highly experienced mechanical, software, electrical, process and materials engineering peers to achieve your objectives.Develop compelling product architectures that are robust and extensible. What you'll need:5+ years of experience designing dynamic mechanical precision systems including actuators and motors. At least one successful product life cycle that you've stewarded from conception to successful market launch.Demonstrated experience developing products from a clean sheet.Solid command of engineering fundamentals, design principles, and detailed drawing.Strong creativity, the ability to take and manage technical risks, and lead by influencing.Proven track record of design leadership for product development.Hands-on experience designing, building, and validating automated mechanical systems.Demonstrated knowledge of rapid prototyping and scale production manufacturing processes (including machining, sheet metal, injection molding, etc.).Comfortable with all phases of product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification & validation, qualification, and transfer to manufacturing.Excellent written & verbal communication and presentation skills.Proven experience and proficiency using CAD to design and document both large and small parts and assemblies.Minimum B.S. (Mechanical Engineering or other related Engineering field equivalent). Bonus points for:Experience with design of physical vapor deposition systems (sputtering, thermal evaporation, electron beam evaporation).Experience with high vacuum system design.Experience with laser and optical systems.
