STREET MAINTENANCE WORKER II - SIGN SHOP Position Summary
This is a position responsible for daily functions of the Sign Shop including stocking, fabrication, and installation of City traffic signage, application of pavement markings on City streets and parking lots and providing traffic control set-ups for projects and special events.
Salting and snow plowing of streets and alleys is required.
This position reports directly to the Street Superintendent.
Essential Functions Fabricates and installs City traffic signs. Establishes and administers programs for periodic and scheduled replacement and /or upgrading of traffic signs and posts to meet safety and retro-reflectivity standards. Evaluates pavement striping needs and performs striping work on City streets and parking lots. Designs and sets up work zones for City crews. Reviews, coordinates, and administers scheduled traffic control set ups for special events including festivals, parades, walk/run/cycling races, car shows, and City Centre events.
Required to work Thanksgiving Day for the annual Turkey Trot race and a Saturday in early March for the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Coordinates signage and traffic control requests for projects and activities from various City departments including Engineering, Police, Fire, and City partners. Maintains and coordinates delivery and pick up of City-owned and rented barricades for block parties. Monitors condition and maintains traffic wands at railroad crossings, scheduling and making repairs as necessary. Works with Central Stores and the Street Superintendent to maintain stock of supplies needed for Sign Shop operations, including but not limited to, pavement marking paint, sign blanks and posts, delineators, traffic wands and flags, and hardware. Assists Superintendent in researching suitable products to meet specific traffic control needs, solicits quotes, and places orders. Researches, evaluates, and recommends the purchase of necessary equipment. Maintains daily log and completes monthly work reports on work performed and equipment used.
Performs salting and snow plowing of streets and alleys.
Responsible for mandatory assignment to snow shift duties during winter operations. Participates in required overtime work, including but not limited to: storm watch prior to rain events, storm response during rain events, and overnight sidewalk cleaning in the City's Central Business District.
Responds to emergency work situations 24/7 including emergency call-ins, night, weekend, holiday, and all planned or unplanned operations necessary. Performs related duties and manual labor as assigned. Maintains an awareness of safety guidelines and procedures and applies these while performing daily activities.
Operates equipment safely, efficiently, and effectively.
Sets up safe work zones including barricades, signage, and traffic flagging.
Obeys JULIE locate rules for utility services when excavating.
Corrects and reports work hazards encountered. Reports all work related accidents, injuries, or damage to property or equipment.
Complies with safety rules.
Attends safety programs as required.
Uses personal protective equipment as necessary. Works well on an individual basis and in a team environment. Communicates effectively and provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; minimum one year experience in sign manufacturing and installation, pavement striping, and the operation and maintenance of light duty vehicles/equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Required Knowledge/Skills Ability to walk, stand, reach, lift, climb, balance, kneel, stoop, and to use hands and fingers to operate equipment and hand tools. Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 50 lbs and occasionally lift up to 100 lbs (with assistance). Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time in all weather conditions. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Knowledge of the proper methods/techniques used in sign fabrication and maintenance, pavement marking application, and construction work zone set-up. Ability to operate, maintain, service, and make emergency repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment in an effective and safe manner.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; minimum one year experience in sign manufacturing and installation, pavement striping, and the operation and maintenance of light duty vehicles/equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
Must have valid driver's license.
Class A-CDL with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsement required within one year of hire.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position.
Salary: $28.67-$37.29 per hour.
Includes Union Local 150 health insurance benefits, tuition reimbursement, paid time off, and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
