Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, maintain an assigned school plant, group of buildings or office space in a clean, orderly and secure manner during an assigned shift.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Custodian II incumbents operate cleaning equipment and perform general custodial duties in the care and cleaning of assigned District offices, school sites and other facilities.
The Custodian I is assigned routine cleaning and sanitizing duties in the high school cafeteria.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform custodial duties according to established schedules and procedures; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; clean chalkboards and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners.

Clean, scrub and disinfect restrooms, showers and related areas; wash windows, walls, tables and benches; polish metal work, clean sinks, mirrors and other bathroom fixtures; empty and clean the waste receptacles.

Maintain custodial equipment and materials; refill various classroom and rest room dispensers, including paper towels, soap and related items; request additional materials according to established procedures.

Assure security of buildings and grounds during assigned shift; lower flags; lock and unlock doors and gates; pick up paper and other debris from grounds and buildings.

Operate modern custodial equipment including buffers, vacuum cleaners, brooms, mops and scrubbing equipment.

Report damage or unsafe conditions to assigned supervisor.

Adjust and arrange furniture and equipment; set up facilities for special events and meetings as assigned.

Participate in major cleaning and restoration projects during vacation periods.

Assist with general maintenance duties as requested.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning blackboards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
Cleaning materials, disinfectants and equipment used in custodial work.
Safety practices and work methods.
Requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
ABILITY TO:
Maintain an assigned school plant, group of buildings or office space in a clean, orderly and secure manner during an assigned shift.
Learn the schedules, procedures and use of custodial tools.
Use common cleaning equipment and materials in a safe and efficient manner.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor and outdoor work environment; subject to working evening or variable hours and regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate custodial equipment, standing and walking for extended periods of time, bending at the waist, carrying, pushing or pulling and lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
HAZARDS:
Exposure to fumes from cleaning chemicals and disinfectants.

This Substitute Custodian II Position reports as needed and will be called to replace a regular Custodian II employee who is not able to fulfil their assignment for one or more days.
