Position: School Nurse
DEFINITION Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the school nurse develops and maintains a broad program of health education and services designed to protect, maintain and enhance the health of students. The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by identifying and remediating health related barriers that may impede the ability of students to learn.
RESPONSIBILITIES Conducts mandated health screenings i.e., vision, hearing, scoliosis and follow-up; complete related required annual reports and maintain health records.
Informs and advises teachers and staff of any unusual health conditions of students which may have classroom implications for the student and/or teacher.
Monitors the safe administration of medication for students with physician order to take prescription medication at school.
Participates in the identification and evaluation of students recommended for special education assessment; complete developmental history reports and participates in IEP meetings when appropriate.
Monitors compliance with immunization requirements; completes required immunization reports, interprets immunization requirements and rationale to staff, students, and parents; assists parents in complying with district immunization requirements.
Provides parent and staff referrals to appropriate programs and services regarding health related issues.
Implements and monitors a communicable disease prevention and control program with district, county, and state guidelines.
Serves as a health education and staff development consultant to classroom teachers and parents.
Assists in the implementation of the district health curriculum, particularly in the areas of drug, alcohol and tobacco use prevention education, family life education, HIV/AIDS education and control of communicable diseases.
Teaches, supervises, and evaluates Specialized School Healthcare procedures provided to identified students.
Consults with healthcare providers as appropriate to promote the health and welfare of students.
Provides professional supervision of office staff and instructional assistants at assigned work site(s).
Participates on district wide committees related to health, safety, and welfare of students.
QUALIFICATIONS Valid Registered Nurse license
B.A. or higher degree from an accredited university
California School Nurse Services Credential OR Eligibility for Preliminary School Nurse Services Credential
Current CPR Certificate
