DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Director of Child Nutrition, monitor the policies and procedures of the Child Nutrition department in all schools; to monitor food service equipment and ensure its safe and proper operation; to monitor safety at all sites; to write memos and procedures with regard to safety and proper food service procedures and techniques; to supervise all catering events; to make reports and recommendations to the Director of Child Nutrition and Child Nutrition Managers; to provide orientation and training to new and continuing employees; and to provide assistance to the Director and Food Service Managers in improving the quality and efficiency of the Child Nutrition Department.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class are distinguished by duties related to the operation of all school cafeterias, duties related to orientation and training of new and continuing employees, requisitions and orders food and supplies for all school cafeterias, assists with developing and updating of the procedure manuals.
The incumbent works within a framework of established policies and procedures and the directions of the Child Nutrition Director but is expected to plan and organize his/her daily work for maximum effectiveness.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Circulate among schools and provide instruction on policies, procedures and methods; visit schools regularly to inspect operations, determine adequacy and effectiveness of food service operations, and provide assistance.Assist in developing standards for health, safety and service.Provide orientation and training to new and continuing employees.Assist child nutrition personnel with immediate or specific issues on a daily basis; contact vendors concerning products, service and delivery; assist with special activities and food requirements.Assist the Director in remaining current concerning issues, expedite communications between District and schools and assist with a variety of operating problems.Performs related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Methods and practices in large-scale food preparation.Sanitation and safety regulations.Management, food service and child nutrition policies, practices, and procedures relative to the management of a comprehensive food and nutrition service program.
Federal, state and local laws, codes, and statutes related to public school food service programs.Planning and analyzing menus to meet nutritional standards and cost restrictions.Principles and practices of supervision and training.Operation of food service facilities office and kitchen management. Ability to: Effectively and efficiently plan, organize and supervise a comprehensive food and nutrition service program at multiple school sites.Assure nutritionally balanced and attractive menus as per State and Federal regulations.Select, supervise, train and evaluate food service staff.Operate office machines and equipment including a personal computer, telephone, tablet, copier, and calculator proficiently.Effectively and efficiently supervise a variety of personalities with a minimum of disruption.Work successfully with diverse groups of people.Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
Establish and maintain effective rapport with students, staff, law enforcement agencies, parents, and community members. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, four years experience in quantity food preparation and serving, and at least two years experience in a supervisory position.
A B.A.
/ B.S.
Degree or above in dietetics, institutional food services, culinary arts, or restaurant management will be considered equivalent to four (4) years of experience in quantity food preparation.
