Job Title: Surgery Support Staff

Department: Surgical Services

Reports To: Nurse Manager, Surgical Services

SUMMARY

In collaboration with the Surgical Services Manager or Charge nurse, coordinates surgery scheduling, registration, patient education, customer services, ordering supplies, cleaning, stocking, and patient transport.
The individual in this position will also perform some delegated functions such as vital signs and transporting specimens.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Other duties may be assigned.

Performs computer scheduling of patient appointments for surgery, endoscopy and outpatient procedure.


Communicates with staff and departments regarding scheduling changes (i.e., add-ons, cancellations, delays).
Maintains the surgery schedule.
Acts as the central focus for communication in the patient care unit for the members of the healthcare team, patients, and visitors.

Prepares patient EMR and paper chart for upcoming scheduled surgical procedures including but not limited to: physician orders, pre-op History and Physical, Clinic note, and pertinent lab results.

Provides keyboarding, computer, clerical and phone support for department.

Provides communication with patients regarding pre and postoperative instructions and registration.

Actively participates in training and orientation of new staff.

Considers age-related factors when dealing with patients ranging from neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
Applies knowledge of age-related factors appropriately in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies & procedures.

Assists with transfer of patients, equipment, and specimens as delegated by the R.N.
Demonstrates knowledge of safety issues.

Utilizes office equipment including: computer, printer, copier, fax, and telephone.

Assist in cleaning rooms, patient vital signs and patient personal cares as delegated by RN.


Performs general housekeeping duties that are specific to Surgical Services.

Work as a collaborative member of the Surgery team.
Demonstrates the ability to perform accurately and maintain composure while in a stressful environment.
Demonstrate the ability to adjust to increased volume and activity.

Attends certification required classes, department meetings and education meetings.

Supports the policies and procedures of the organization and the standards of The Joint Commission as required for full accreditation.
Supports Joint Commission objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); BLS certification required.
Ability to demonstrate a high level of accuracy when documenting details.
EPIC scheduling and/or Admissions experience preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak to individual patients and family members with clarity and in a manner which may be understood by the patient regarding patient care and preparation for medical procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively regarding scheduling conflicts and requirements.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.


REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems; ability to deal with conflict in a diplomatic and understandable manner.
Ability to reason and formulate resolutions under pressure, and to consider best manner to communicate resolutions tactfully.
Ability to understand and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form, and to determine and apply the appropriate concrete or variable instruction.
Ability to maintain concentration and follow-through on tasks while receiving interruptions or multiple tasks/instructions at one time.
Ability to determine priority of tasks necessary to ensure the highest quality of care for patients' unique situations.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATIONS

High school diploma; medical technology desired.
