Scheduled Hours 40 Position Summary Under general supervision, the person in this position is responsible for design, implementation, and engineering support for technology solutions such as server virtualization, collaboration systems, active directory and database solutions. The engineer must possess a broad range of technical skills and experience with enterprise-class services. The engineer will work with a team of technical staff within the Washington University IT organization to ensure that WashU IT services stay aligned with University initiatives that include research, teaching, patient care, and administrative objectives. Job Description Primary Duties and Responsibilities Perform research, analyze technology, consult vendors, and apply best practices to design technical solutions by Utilizing systems analysis techniques and procedures, including consulting with users, to determine hardware, software, or system functional specifications. Typically related to new implementations or enhancements of enterprise scale and moderate complexity. Validate, test and implement new products and services. Provide technical and advisory leadership as required to complete objectives. Respond to and resolve incidents escalated from lower-level engineers and performance tuning requests utilizing critical thinking skills. Create and maintain documentation related to services, solutions and interfaces. Provide training and mentoring for other personnel. Perform other duties as assigned. Working Conditions This position will participate in on call rotations and will occasionally require working evenings and weekends. This position will need to be able to travel to on-campus and off-campus locations for meetings as needed. Preferred Qualifications System Based:
Linux based computing environments. The Atlassian suite of team collaboration tools: Jira, Confluence, Bamboo, Bitbucket. Open-source development tools and languages: Git, Bash, Perl, Python, Ruby, Go. Configuration management and orchestration with Puppet and Ansible. Scheduled jobs and workflows with Jenkins. Centralized log management with ElasticSearch, Logstash, Kibana, Splunk. Metrics and visualizations with Graphite and Grafana. Monitoring and alert management with Prometheus and PagerDuty. High performance or high throughput computing with IBM Platform and Spectrum products. Docker containers and Kubernetes runtime environments. Cloud infrastructure provisioning with Terraform. Relational database services based on PostgreSQL and MySQL. Other Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree plus five years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working in higher education. Professional certification. Experience in enterprise-scale environments. Experience as a technical team leader. Experience with systems analysis techniques and procedures and developing functional specifications. Technology specifics as above [key technologies such as VMWare for virtualization, Exchange/SharePoint for Collaboration, SQL DB, Tiered enterprise storage systems]. High aptitude for learning new technologies. Ability to effectively communicate technical issues. Effective oral and written presentation skills. Ability to adjust to changes in priorities. Ability to work with minimal supervision with a high degree of accuracy. Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new circumstances. Good organizational skills. Flexible and willing to work extended hours as necessary and recognize the need to do so. Ability to adjust scheduled time. Able to exercise good judgment and demonstrate a proactive approach to problem solving. Required Qualifications Associate degree plus five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Grade G15 Salary Range $82,500.00 - $145,200.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
