The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL).
To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.
This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff.
The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists.
The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
Brookhaven National Laboratory was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.
The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe.
The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider.
It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions.
Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.
The Isotope Research and Production (IP) Department serves a national mission to prepare certain commercially unavailable radioisotopes for distribution to the nuclear medicine community as well as industry.
The IP Department also performs research to develop new radioisotopes for nuclear medicine investigators and performs irradiations for non-isotope applications, sells by-products, and explores opportunities for new products and radioisotope applications.
