About the Traverso Lab The Traverso lab is focused on translational medicine. Our main goal is to help people through the use of medicine and engineering. Research projects involve medical devices that can range from diagnostic, drug delivery, surgical, and implantable devices.
Dr. Giovanni Traverso is a Physician-Scientist who is an Assistant Professor at MIT Mechanical Engineering, and an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and the Division of Gastroenterology at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH).
This position will require direct on-boarding and will be stationed at a satellite facility of the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Cambridge, but will involve work with a multidisciplinary team from across the different MIT/Harvard/BWH institutions.
Position Overview In this position, you will join a multidisciplinary group that supports initiatives focused on developing clinically relevant solutions to gastrointestinal and vaginal probiotic delivery systems. The work in this project will cover design, fabrication, and testing of an intravaginal ring with the use of various techniques within the molecular biology and microbiology field. The position also offers experience in the analysis of in vivo data that will further inform device development.
Responsibilities Assisting and learning current protocols for high throughput screening, DNA isolation for sequencing, lyophilization, and excipient/formulation characterization. Culturing aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Tracking laboratory safety protocols and chemical waste disposal. Ensuring, maintaining, updating, and organizing stock of agar plates, liquid culture media, frozen bacterial stocks, and supply of compound plates. Maintaining, updating, and cataloging chemical inventory. Ordering materials and laboratory upkeep. May train and coordinate the work of student employees and/or temporary staff. Communicate, interpret, and provide training on lab policies. Required Qualifications and Skills Candidate is ideally pursuing a bachelor's degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, biology, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, microbiology, or pharmacology/toxicology and has previous experience in a molecular biology or biochemistry lab (may include co-op and internship experience); proficiency with pipetting, serial dilutions, and aseptic technique; experience with DNA isolation, plasmid cloning, and DNA sequencing; experience both designing and conducting PCR; experience with bacterial and mammalian cell culturing; and ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
Additionally, it is preferred that a candidate demonstrates experience in high throughput screening experiments; knowledge of and experience with culturing in an anaerobic chamber; knowledge of lyophilization, pharmaceutical formulation development, and formulations characterizations; experience with programming languages such as Python; ability to work independently or collaboratively; willingness to learn and apply new tools and techniques; experience documenting, summarizing, and reporting results to interdisciplinary researchers; and a commitment to producing accurate and high-quality work.
