The Translational Research Model Services (TRMS) Specialist I works in the service arm of the Comparative Medicine (CM) Shared Resource. They are responsible for performing standard technical procedures and data collection for animal studies performed for Fred Hutch researchers and external customers. The Specialist I will also support maintenance of stock rodent colonies and colonies for FH labs. This position requires independence and self-motivation. The Specialist I is expected to continue to acquire skills and knowledge to perform more advanced work through training.

Responsibilities A TRMS Specialist I works independently but under direct supervision of the TRMS Core Manager within the Comparative Medicine (CM) Shared Resource. This position will communicate issues to their manager on an established schedule. This position has no responsibility for supervision of others. There is high oversight and training from the resource director and senior staff and partial interfacing with resource users.
PRIMARY/ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Research Support:
Learn and become proficient with in vivo technical procedures such as injections and other substance administration procedures, blood draw techniques, in vivo imaging, health observations and other biological data collections. Learn and perform related procedures including (but not limited to) animal preparation, and anesthesia and monitoring. Opportunity to learn additional technical skills as new projects are developed. Limited benchtop work supporting receipt of substances for protocol use or in sample handling/preparation. Use of Microsoft Office products and mobile devices, and vivarium databased to support these projects. Colony Oversight:
Maintain various CM and principal investigator-owned mouse colonies. This includes performing animal observations, selection and setting up of breeder groups, sexing and weaning offspring, genotyping and identification. Training and Education:
Follow all SOPs, training materials, and guidelines for use of imaging and other experimental equipment. Administrative tasks:
Diligently maintain breeding records and production metrics for researcher colonies and CM stock mouse production colonies. Maintain appropriate data requested by the researcher. Regulatory and Compliance:
Comprehensive understanding of IACUC protocols covering work performed by TRMS, with strict adherence to compliance and confirmation of approved activities. Communicate feedback to supervisor on suggestions for amendments needed on protocols. Participate in biohazard training and reading of IBC protocols as applicable to study assignments Other duties as assigned. The TRMS Specialist I is classified as essential personnel and, as such, is required to work with minimal number of absences and during all Center closures except in the event of a major disaster when access to animal housing and use facilities is prohibited by governmental emergency personnel.
Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate's degree in Biology or related field. 1+ years' experience of rodent handling in research setting. Work Experience can be substituted for education: 4+ years' experience in biological science laboratory using rodent models. AALAS certification at the ALAT or higher level is required, and persons hired for this position should continue to pursue this certification as soon as possible once eligible, until achieved. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new systems and techniques. Ability to learn advanced technical procedures in rodents. Understanding of laboratory rodent housing, radiation safety, biohazard containment, rodent pathogens, and risk reduction measures. Experience with performing sterile procedures to avoid contamination of test and control articles, test systems, and/or other animal-based aspects of the experimental design. Experience with rodent colony maintenance. Excellent communication skills and organizational skills. Ability to work in a collaborative team-oriented environment. Experience with MS Office suite of applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Sharepoint, Teams, One Drive, etc. Attention to detail. Record keeping and database. The hourly pay range for this position is from $28.34 to $40.35 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
