Summary:
Transport/messenger position, is a position that helps with transporting patients from one unit to another, to a testing department and back or assisting with a patient discharge.
It also involves transporting of specimens to the laboratory as well as picking up with items essential for patient care.
This can be retrieving wheelchairs and stretcher or picking up blood from the blood bank.
Responsibilities:
Employee complies departmental procedures and requirements as evidenced by employee?s knowledge of and attendance at (i) department and hospital orientation programs, (ii) annual mandatory education (iii) participation in periodic drills and (iv) staff meetings.
2.Works effectively with members of the health care team, administrative personnel and maintains a cooperative working relationship intra-departmentally and inter-departrmentally.
Practices effective telephone skills/etiquette by answering within 3 rings whenever possible, consistently identifies department and self and picking up voicemails.
Safeguards the confidential information of the organization, including contractual information, payroll, and other business-related functions, as well as safeguarding Protected Health Information according to HIPAA and other state related laws.
While treating each personal encounter with discretion and sensitivity and assures that all confidential information remains private
Assist with movement of patients from one unit to another or to a testing area and back.
This includes transferring patients in and out of bed, from wheelchair/stretcher to chair, from wheelchair to patients? vehicle at discharge.
Perform 1:1 observation on non-suicidal/non-violent patients as assigned by the nursing staff and document as per policy.
Transports supplies, equipment, correspondence, and other items, i.e., may retrieve bedside scale/hoyer lift,deliver pharmacy orders, etc.
Follows NYS Department of Corrections (DOC) guidelines when working with DOC patients
Use of safety behaviors such as using two patient identifiers before offering service to the patient, making sure bed or stretcher is in its lowest position and locked at all times before leaving a patient, ensuring hallways are free from clutter.
Identifies and provides input on opportunities for improvement and prevention of errors through the performance improvement process and patient safety program.
Appropriately and pro-actively addresses questions and concerns regarding corporate compliance and related issues to supervisor or corporate compliance, attends appropriate compliance training and knows the rules and regulations that apply to their job.
Demonstrates the ability to initiate complaint resolution and create an environment that makes it easy for customers to express concern.
Employee is familiar with and adheres to all Putnam hospital policy
Employee is familiar with and adheres to hospital infection control policies and procedures as evidenced by his/her attendance at (1) department and hospital wide orientation programs, (2) mandatory education sessions and (3) department specific infection control lectures/film presentation.
(4) Hand washing
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: HS GRAD/EQUIVALENT
Other Information:
High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
