Position Summary:
The Underwriting Support Supervisor will join ORSC's Underwriting Operations Team. While the preferred location for this role is West Des Moines, IA, candidates in North Liberty, IA; Aurora, IL; or Hudson, WI will also be considered. This role is responsible for managing and overseeing the underwriting support team to ensure effective and efficient operations. Duties include maintaining and fostering agency relationships, issuing and managing bid/performance bonds, handling administrative tasks, and supporting the underwriting process. The supervisor will also act as a back-up for underwriters, manage renewals, and assist with web-based bond software applications. Additionally, the supervisor will lead and mentor the underwriting support team, contributing to their development and performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Supervision and Development:
Supervise direct reports, including making recommendations for performance management and disciplinary action.
Train subordinates to achieve goals and contribute to their professional development.
Participate in the new employee selection process to ensure the recruitment of qualified candidates.
Agent Service and Business Quoting:
Provide exceptional service to agents by delivering clear and concise information when soliciting and quoting business within underwriting guidelines and/or authority.
Processing and Documentation:
Process new business submissions, renewals, endorsements, cancellations, and reinstatements under the underwriter's instructions into the billing system.
Obtain additional underwriting information for accounts/bonds, including credit reports, bond forms, statutes, calculating premiums, requests for applications or financials, and other information directed by the underwriter.
Examine applications and forms for completeness and risk acceptability under established guidelines.
Review submissions for approval within granted authority or present to the underwriter for assessment.
Accurately document accounts and bonds in all surety-related applications while composing detailed notes.
Web-Based Bond Software Support:
Promote and demonstrate the use of web-based bond software applications to agents.
Support agents and Home Office staff with requests related to web-based bond software applications.
Claims and Accounting Support:
Provide Home Office Claims with claim notices and appropriate bond information, and assist with information requests.
Assist Home Office with accounting discrepancies and past due accounts.
Review direct bill/agency bill past due lists monthly and contact principals and agents regarding overdue payments.
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent required; a minimum of five years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proven experience in underwriting support, including bond issuance and management.
Strong knowledge of bond products, underwriting processes, and web-based software applications.
Ability to work independently and effectively within a fast-paced environment.
Proficiency with Microsoft (MS) Windows and Office products.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong organizational and accurate proofreading skills.
Ability to maintain accurate records and exercise discretion with confidential information.
Strong attention to detail and the ability to use a variety of office equipment.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work in an office environment, including sitting for extended periods.
Occasional travel may be required for meetings or training sessions.
