Job Description
We are looking for a Veterinary Assistant who is interested in joining a growing surgical oncology team. The ideal candidate is interested in providing high quality veterinary care, excellent client & patient service, and helping surgical and cancer patients.
The surgical oncology service is a friendly group composed of 2 board certified surgeons who are ACVS Fellows of Surgical Oncology, one surgical oncology intern, one clinical intern and a Licensed Veterinary Technician. The caseload is growing and is mostly referral patients. We are expanding our minimally invasive surgery options. The surgical oncology service currently operates out of two locations, the main Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Blacksburg and the Animal Cancer Care and Research Center in Roanoke, but this job is for the Blacksburg location only. In Blacksburg, the service is supported by ancillary services such as anesthesia for major surgeries, ICU/critical care for complicated cases, radiology for imaging and a laboratory. We collaborate with all other services in the hospital and foster a positive, learning environment for the entire team. We work closely with the Animal Cancer Care and Research Center to provide comprehensive oncology care to our patients. Daily virtual case rounds are held with the medical and radiation oncologists.

The Veterinary Assistant will provide: patient nursing care, husbandry and grooming before an dafter surgeries; clean, disinfect and stock daily; collaboration with/support of faculty, interns, LVTs and students; Client communication, patient history, clerical support, patient restraint and obtain vital signs; other duties assigned by supervisor.
Required Qualifications
Working knowledge of companion animal anatomy and physiology, knowledge of basic nursing skills. Experience in a veterinary clinical setting. Must be able to recognize needs and establish priorities in order to ensure quality patient care. Ability to follow instructions, good communication skills, and ability to handle and restrain animals. Must be able to safely move and handle up to 50 lbs. Rabies prophylaxis is required (provided by employer).
