Job Description
The Vice Commandant is the principal advisor to the Commandant, authorized to provide directives and guidance in the Commandant's absence and responsible for day-today leadership and direction of the Commandant's Staff, particularly regarding Corps operations. Key responsibilities and duties include:
• Leads, integrates, and synchronizes the staff to translate the Commandant's guidance and intent into policies, processes, and actions.
• Coaches and develops staff through mentorship, training, feedback, and assessment.
• Represents the Commandant as directed.
• Implements and enforces codified staff roles, responsibilities, and organization.
• Regularly or as directed, reviews staff guidance and recommends appropriate revision to the Commandant.
• With Commandant concurrence, formulates and disseminates staff policies.
• Serves as the focal point and clearing house for all internally-facing information and communications.
• Establishes and maintains an appropriate rhythm of regular, efficient, and professionally-conducted staff meetings.
• Presides over all staff meetings in the Commandant's absence.
• Ensures all tasks and problem sets are comprehensively analyzed; assigns lead and supporting roles to ensure appropriate coordinated and integrated actions consistent with Virginia Tech and Corps guidance and policy.
• Constantly maintains situational awareness of ongoing actions to ensure appropriate prioritization, manage staff bandwidth, and deconflict issues.
• Establish and maintain productive professional relationships with all external partners and stakeholders, ensuring the fullest possible transparency and flow of information.
• Keeps Commandant fully informed of all ongoing and planned actions, issues, and implications.
• Serve as classroom instructor when required by circumstances.
• Assign lead and alternate responsibility for collateral duties.
• Exercises direct supervisory responsibility as authorized by the Commandant.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or above
- Senior service college graduate
- Retirement at the grade of O-6
- O-5 command or military/civilian equivalent
- Executive or Operations Officer for O-6 command or military/civilian equivalent
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced, high-tempo environment as well as demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to handle unexpected challenges or changes in organizational needs
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
- Retirement at the grade of O-7
- O-6 command or military/civilian equivalent
- Prior service on General/Flag Officer staff or civilian equivalent
- Experience in ROTC/Senior Military College environment
- Faculty/staff experience in a civilian academic environment
