BMC Health System's VP/Chief Pharmacy Officer is an executive position, responsible for comprehensive strategic and operational pharmacy services leadership for Boston Medical Center and the BMCHP. Provides direction regarding the utilization and implementation of clinical pharmacy programs, medication related technology, medication information systems, safe use of medications, cost containment/cost reduction programs, contract compliance and regulatory oversight of pharmacy to ensure clinical, operational and supply excellence.ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES: Responsible for comprehensive strategic and operational pharmacy services execution of business strategies for department products and services leadership for Boston Medical Center and the BMCHP. Serves as the principal advocate for Medication Use quality initiatives within the institution. Ultimately responsible for the oversight of the inpatient, outpatient, and research pharmacies and all pharmaceutical care services provided by Boston Medical Center.Provides direction regarding the utilization and implementation of clinical pharmacy programs, medication related technology, medication information systems, safe use of medications, cost containment/cost reduction programs, contract compliance and regulatory oversight of pharmacy to ensure clinical, operational and supply excellence.Works with department directors and leadership to provide guidance in the development, implementation and supervision of programs to promote cost-effective pharmaceutical care services.Directs and participates in growth activities to support overall business objectives and plans.Responsible for compliance with all Federal, State and Local laws, regulations and rules; compliance with all accreditation standards and knowledge of and adherence to all policies and procedures of the organization and department.Responsible for addressing compliance related issues with all third party payers, including government (Medicare, Medicaid, HSN etc.) or commercial payors.Responsible for the creation and maintenance of a healthy work environment. Defines, develops and implements short and long term strategies and plans to meet organizational objectives within specified target date. The Director will use evidence-based processes to ensure the highest level of quality, safety and service. On an annual basis develops cost savings plans with clinical leadership to minimize drug and maintains the best practice in supply chain while ensuring maximal quality and safety of drug therapy.Directs Pharmacy operations to meet budget and other financial goals. Directs short-term and long-range planning and budget development to support strategic business goals.Establish the performance goals, allocate resources, and assess policies for senior management.Participates in market development, including participation in community outreach, community involvement, government relations work and more.Develops excellent work relationships with Hospital staff and colleagues.Provides leadership input on hospital wide committees, including but not limited to co-chairing the Medication Safety Quality Committee with a physician.The Chief Pharmacy Officer is responsible for the following duties and activities:Mandatory training requirements as per hospital policy.Continuing education/in-services to enhance knowledge.Staff meetings.Performance improvement initiatives.Orientation of new staff, students and/or volunteers.Utilizes hospital's values as the basis for decision making.Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.JOB REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION: B.S. degree in Pharmacy from an accredited College of Pharmacy and Phar.D. or other advanced degree required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: Valid license as a pharmacist in the State of Massachusetts is required.
EXPERIENCE: At least ten years of experience in hospital pharmacy management required. Academic medical center experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Experience on pharmaceutical contracting, P&T committee organization and pharmacy integration in clinical practice.Training in negotiations and communications.Knowledgeable of process improvement approaches and their application in clinical settings.Proven leadership and communication skills proven with clinical settings.Equal Opportunity Employer/Disabled/Veterans
