About the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, America's Black think tank, provides compelling and actionable policy solutions to eradicate persistent and evolving barriers to the full freedom of Black people in America. We are the trusted forum for leading experts and scholars to participate in major public policy debates and promote ideas that advance Black communities. We use evidence-based research, analysis, convenings, and strategic communications to support Black communities and a network of allies.
Currently, the Joint Center focuses on:
Economic Policy, which centers Black communities in policy debates about workforce policy, small business, economic development, tax policy, and household economic security.Workforce Policy, which centers Black workers in policy debates concerning the future of work, workforce development, and access to good jobs.Technology Policy, which is dedicated to exploring the impact of emerging technologies and developing policy solutions to improve the lives of Black communities.Government Diversity, which focuses on Black staff representation in Congress (Hill Diversity) and presidential appointments (Black Talent Initiative).The OpportunityThe Vice President, Government Affairs is a key member of the Joint Center's leadership team, responsible for spearheading the organization's legislative and advocacy efforts. This individual will develop and implement comprehensive strategies that influence public policy, strengthen partnerships, and align with the Joint Center's mission of empowering Black communities.
Primary ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership: Design and oversee the execution of government relations and advocacy initiatives, ensuring alignment with the Joint Center's strategic goals.Policy Development: Collaborate with research teams to translate policy research findings into actionable legislative proposals.Legislative Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with federal, state, and local government officials, agencies, and legislative bodies to advocate for the Joint Center's policy priorities.Advocacy Campaigns: Lead cross-functional teams in planning and implementing advocacy campaigns that mobilize stakeholders and the public to support key policy initiatives.Stakeholder Collaboration: Foster and maintain strong partnerships with community organizations, advocacy groups, think tanks, and coalitions to amplify collective impact.Advisory Role: Serve as a trusted advisor to the President and executive leadership on legislative and advocacy matters, providing updates, strategic insights, and policy recommendations.Communications & Public Affairs: Work closely with the communications team to develop policy briefs, public statements, and other materials that effectively communicate the Joint Center's policy positions.Event Representation: Represent the Joint Center at legislative hearings, public forums, conferences, and media engagements as needed.QualificationsEducation: Master's degree in public policy, political science, law, or a related field.Experience: Minimum 10 years of experience in government relations, legislative affairs, or public policy, with a strong track record of successful advocacy and leadership.Knowledge: Deep understanding of legislative processes, public policy development, and key issues affecting Black communities.Skills: Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills. Strong communication, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex policy issues effectively.Relationships: Established network of contacts within government agencies, legislative bodies, and advocacy organizations.Commitment: Demonstrated commitment to equity, social justice, and the empowerment of Black communities.Adaptability: Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with a proactive and flexible approach.The Vice President of Government Affairs will be based in Washington DC and may require occasional travel for meetings and conferences. The role requires a high degree of professionalism and the ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership, board members, and external partners.
Commensurate with experience, the salary band for this position is $200k-$230k. Benefits include 100% employer-sponsored healthcare, dental, and vision; as well as STD, LTD, and life insurance coverage. After one year of employment, up to a 5% match in our 403(b) plan. Generous PTO, quarterly mental health days, and no-meeting Fridays.
