Position Summary
The Vice President of Sponsored Programs is responsible for the management and oversight of the project director team in our pursuit and implementation of sponsored programs for AIHEC by successfully proposing and directing funds to support the mission and strategic priorities of AIHEC.
The incumbent will manage activities related to grants and contracts funding, establish and oversee processes to ensure compliance with funders, federal, state and accepted industry standards, provide support to administration and staff, and provide resources and training to support a culture of effective sponsored program management.
The ideal candidate will have proven experience providing leadership, support, and strategic direction for all sponsored programs administration.
Essential Functions: Serve as liaison with a variety of agencies and professional groups to keep abreast of current developments and to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Work closely with staff from a variety of disciplines, Finance & Accounting to encourage a culture of excellence in grantsmanship.Provides effective leadership, direction, supervision, training, and mentorship to program management, contracts and grants personnel in support of the mission of the organization.Knowledgeable of federal, state, and other sponsor regulations governing grant and contract administration, including Office of Management & Budget Circulars and Federal Acquisition Regulations.General knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies relating to the protection of the rights of indigenous people in higher education and other compliance related activities.Knowledgeable of the necessary infrastructure needed to maximize successful proposal preparation including managing the support for technical writing, graphics, budgeting, and building coalitions for inter/multi-disciplinary proposal submissions.Supports program development, proposal review and approval, negotiations of research contracts and grants and consummate applicable grants and contracts with funding agencies.
Thorough understanding of primary granting agency programs/processes and award terms and conditions pertinent to grant-funded program management.Gathers and reports on meaningful metrics to assist in reaching strategic goals for program management.Coordinate with Grants Accounting Administrator for the fiscal administration, budgeting, and other compliance issues related to grants, contract accounts, or other sponsored internal and external programs as appropriate.Promote constant review and improvement of the administrative procedures governing sponsored programs to ensure the highest quality service is provided to all funders.Coordinate training, coaching, and mentoring to pre- and post-award and other personnel in the Office of Research and the research community.Responsible for setting the annual budgets for Pre-award and Training, working with the VP of Finance to ensure the budget is on track.Provide other support to the President & CEO and any other applicable duties as required in support of the mission and vision of AIHEC.Required Education, Experience and Attributes (minimum requirements): Bachelor's or master's degree and 8+ years of relevant experience, including 3+ years of leadership experience.Understanding of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) higher education issues and other Indigenous communities and Tribal nations.Strong supervisory experience/skills managing 10+ direct reports.Strong program management experience/skills, managing multi-year grant funded programs up to $10M awards.Strong budget/finance experience/skills, ability to develop and manage complex, multi-year budgets.Ability to think strategically and to align program and budget development to org's strategic goals.Ability to work well with leadership team, and foster collaboration/integration across program areas in the org.Ability to work well with funding organizations, cultivating relationships that meet mutual interests, finding new funding opportunities, and managing ongoing projects.Strong communication skills to AIHEC Board, funders, AIHEC staff, and other customers.Strong analytical and research skills.
Some familiarity with statistics and quantitative methods preferred.Experience organizing complex projects involving a diverse group of partners and stakeholders.Ability to present to a variety of audiences, including federal, state and local government officials and policymakers.Preferred Education, Experience and Attributes
Certified Pre-award Research Administrator (CPRA).
Familiarity with the AIHEC policy environment, including public agencies, interest groups, and funding agencies.
Work Location
This position is hybrid, approved for occasional telework, remote with routine in-person activities in support of the mission in Washington, DC and domestic US states where we have active membership.
