Position Summary Michigan State University (MSU) operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. Hosting what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB enables scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities. MSU's nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report .
This position affords an exciting opportunity to become part of the world-class FRIB Laboratory that enables unique discovery opportunities in nuclear science.
Purpose: The Web Application Developer will play an important role in the design, development, documentation, deployment and support of the FRIB business and data systems to support FRIB accelerator construction, commissioning, and operation.
Major Duties/Responsibilities: Work closely with team members to analyze, design, develop, acquire, test, document, modify, and implement solutions in support of FRIB business operations. Provide daily software support, maintenance and enhancement of current Business IT systems, as well as the development, configuration and delivery of new systems. Determine and propose basic systems enhancements (software and hardware) that will improve performance and reliability of systems. Gather and document functional requirements to provide Business IT systems solutions. Assist the internal IT group with integration of various software applications to meet FRIB requirements. Ensure the best possible performance, quality, and responsiveness of applications by following defined best practices. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Experience in software development using Microsoft stack (.Net, ASP.NET Core, C#, Visual Studio, and SQL Server) Experience in full lifecycle solution development (analysis, architecture, design, development, testing, and deployment) Experience with Entity Framework Core Experience with web frameworks & libraries such as jQuery & Bootstrap Experience with T-SQL and common database tools such as SSMS & SSIS Familiarity with the MVC structured development pattern and design deliverables A solid understanding of common web application vulnerabilities and basic security compliance Understanding of code versioning tools such as Git Familiarity with continuous integration & deployment tools such as GitLab Experience with unit testing and test driven development Familiarity with Docker or Kubernetes Ability to participate in periodic code review Ability to participate in periodic code paring sessions Experience with agile/scrum development methodology, processes, backlogs, estimating, time boxing, etc. Experience with developing accessible web sites that comply with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, WCAG 2.0 Familiarity with PHP development environment prior to version 8 Comfortable working in a self-directed agile team environment Excellent interpersonal/communication skills (both verbal and written); excellent analytical, leadership, and organizational skills across all levels of technical and functional units. Position is remote or on-site in East Lansing, MI; working hours are 8am to 5pm Eastern Time M-F Must be available during some off hours for application updates and problem resolution If remote, must be available to work and respond within 15 minutes during 8am-5pm Eastern Time Zone Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
