Position OverviewThe Senior Peer Tutor is a Peer Tutor who has at least one semester of experience working in the Peer Tutor Role. Senior Peer Tutors assist the Tutoring Coordinator with the ongoing training, support, and observation of Peer Tutors. This role includes developing leadership skills among the peer tutor team, offering best practices for tutoring appointments, and acting as a resource for peer tutors. The Senior Peer Tutor helps foster a collaborative learning and leadership environment within the Peer Tutoring program. Senior Peer Tutors will also facilitate biweekly professional development staff meetings for peer tutors, provide feedback, and observe appointments. Additionally, Senior Peer Tutors will also support tutoring by tutoring for classes they received a B- or higher in. Senior Peer Tutors must be available to tutor for a minimum of 4 hours per week beginning the second week of classes through the last week of classes. To prepare for their roles, Senior Peer Tutors are expected to attend: Senior Peer Tutor Training prior to the start of the semester, as well as the multi-day Peer Tutor training prior to the start of the semester. Senior Peer Tutors are expected to work 8-10 hours per week for the full length of the Spring 2025 semester, excluding academic breaks. Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels . However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly). Job DescriptionFacilitate Biweekly Tutor Development Group Meetings (40%): Lead and assist in organizing biweekly group meetings to teach strategies for effective tutoring. Collaborate with other senior tutors to develop and implement best practices and resources. Share insights and feedback to enhance the tutoring program's effectiveness. Meet with Dani biweekly for additional training to lead and plan for tutor development groups. Mentoring Tutors (40%): Provide guidance and support to new and current peer tutors, fostering their professional growth. Assist in training sessions for new tutors, sharing effective techniques and resources. Offer constructive feedback and encouragement to peers to help improve their tutoring skills. Aid in regular check-ins with tutors to ensure students are progressing academically, addressing challenges promptly, and receiving the support they need. Assist in observing tutors and providing constructive feedback for improvement. Administrative Support (20%): Help prepare materials and resources for tutoring sessions and training workshops. Serve as the first line of defense in addressing inquiries and concerns, providing exceptional support and assistance to students, tutors, and staff Required Qualifications Currently employed as a Peer Tutor in Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support. A minimum of a B- letter grade in the courses offered for tutoring. Strong proven written communication skills, as evidenced by application materials. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments) Preferred Qualifications Employed as a Peer Tutor for at least 1 semester in the Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support. Strong proven verbal communication skills, as evidenced by prior work in peer tutoring position and interview. Strong proven understanding of the Tutoring Model and Peer Tutor role as evidenced by prior semester of peer tutor work. An overall GPA of 3.0 or above.
