Full job description COOS BAY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
TITLE: Academic Advisor / High School Counselor
JOB GOAL:
Position works with students, parents/guardians, teachers, other district personnel and professionals in other agencies regarding student educational and career goals, student attendance, student behavior and discipline, healthy lifestyle choices, and appropriate peer and social interactions and related issues. This position also provides social and emotional support for students as it relates to the school setting.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A valid Oregon School Counselor license or Oregon School Social Worker license is preferred, or may hold a valid TSPC license in a related or applicable field. The successful candidate will have at least two years of successful experience in a school setting, (secondary school preferred). Demonstrated knowledge of the role of a public-school counselor or Academic Advisor with a knowledge base of Oregon high school graduation requirements.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Serves and assists students in course planning and maintaining plans for staying on track to graduate. Assists in the coordination and implementation of the school's group testing programs(s) and registration/class scheduling process. Assists in scheduling and administering general student group tests. Assists in the development of the district's high school guidance and counseling program which promotes healthy lifestyle choices, appropriate social and peer interactions, and academic achievement. Assists students in defining long-range and short-range educational goals including course selection, preparation for college and other post-secondary education/training opportunities. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) framework and implements the ASCA model to provide a comprehensive school counseling program. Regularly uses oral, written and electronic communications to students and parents regarding student behavior and student progress towards classroom and district education objectives/goals. Schedules parent conferences as needed or requested. Maintains school rules and standards of student behavior for a safe and productive learning environment. Works with the principal, school staff, and parents regarding individual student behavior and discipline issues. Works with students, parents, school staff, and the administration in developing and maintaining satisfactory student attendance and exploring alternative education settings/programs. Observes, evaluates and refers students who need additional services and support. Interprets individual and or group test data to students and parents including achievement tests, aptitude tests, and interest surveys. Works with parents, students, teachers, and other staff members to familiarize them with services offered by counselors. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in applying conflict management and dispute resolution techniques. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all district policies and procedures. Has consistent, daily and punctual attendance. The employee may occasionally implement crisis prevention/intervention protocols which involve risk of personal injury from students. May provide or instruct staff development activities for staff during in-service meetings, including positive communication, human relations, adolescent growth and development and student discipline/guidance. Serves on building and district committees and councils as assigned. Communicates information about district, school and/or departmental policies and procedures to students, staff, parents and patrons. Supervises students on school grounds, on field trips and at various school functions. Assists teachers with instructing or planning for guidance units as assigned.

** per CBEA contract, Counselors, School Psychologists, Speech Pathologists and Nurses who have been determined to be part of the bargaining unit shall be paid in accordance with the following formula: Counselors = 1.05 x placement on the schedule and has a nine (9) day extended duty contract
