This position is for the Director of Substation Engineering. The position's primary responsibility will be to perform oversight duties related to substation design, personnel mentorship, and business development duties with LUZCO clients.
The Director of Substation Engineering will have overall responsibility for the Substation department consisting of both physical and protection & control (P&C) engineers, designers, and drafters.  The individual will be responsible for providing oversight to the substation department leads. Additionally, they will be accountable for client relationships and department growth. This position reports to the Vice President of Engineering and Professional Services in the St. Louis, Missouri office. Essential Responsibilities: Project design estimate and proposal preparation. Answering questions from the lead engineers on Substation P&C and Physical design. Resource planning and analysis to execute client design packages. Coordination of QA/QC process for physical and P&C design packages for voltage levels 4.16-500kV substations. Including but not limited to: Maximum equipment one-lines, relaying and metering one-lines, relay panel arrangements, relay bills of material, panel wiring diagrams, interconnection wiring diagrams, and cable lists. Substation general arrangements, elevations, and sections; steel drawings, conduit schedules, installation details, and physical bills of material. Power system analysis including load flow, short circuit, and arc flash. Power system protection such as line protection, bus protection, transformer protection, and protective device coordination. Protective system communication topologies and associated hardware. Identify and execute training requirements with the department leads. Answer questions from engineering, construction, testing and commissioning for support of projects. Work with internal LUZCO Business Development resources to obtain additional clients. Develop and maintain a 3-to-5-year strategic plan for the substation department. Responsible for the profitability of the substation department. Some travel to existing clients will be expected. Knowledge & Skills Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent degree preferred. Minimum 10 years of experience in the utility industry or ability to perform QA/QC on Substation projects. Understanding of substation design packages that include but are not limited: Breaker upgrades Bus protection Transformer Replacement and Protection RTU Upgrades, Line and Bus work Fiber Upgrades Feeder Breaker Replacement Ground grid, rigid and strain bus, and raceway designs, etc. Good understanding to create/modify technical specifications for major substation equipment, such as power transformers, power circuit breakers and control house. Relevant Electrical Utility industry knowledge. Knowledge of relevant codes and standards, such as: NERC, NEC, NESC, IEEE, NEMA and ANSI strongly preferred. P.E. License required. Join our team.
