EARLY HEAD START TEACHER General Description:
The EHS teacher has primary responsibility for the appropriateness of the environment, the correctness and completeness of assessments, screenings, and children's records and supervision of the EHS teacher assistant and/or caregiver.

Specific Duties:
The EHS teacher fulfills all duties and responsibilities as caregiver for children assigned to his/her caseload.

Supervises and implements all activities in the EHS environment. Screens children using the designated screening assessment tools. Plans, evaluates and individualizes designated curriculum. Works with the EHS Manager to facilitate a smooth operation of the EHS program. Shares responsibility for the professional development of the staff supervised. Collaborates with parents and other EHS personnel to ensure children and parents have access to community resources. Performs related duties as needed or assigned. Must have the ability to communicate with a variety of people, work independently and maintain strict confidentiality of program data. Must be cooperative and display a positive attitude toward others and work as a team with other staff members. Must exercise discretion and sound judgment in the performance of assigned duties. Must follow all PCA Head Start policies and procedures. Must be willing to do other tasks related to working with infants and toddlers. Duties and Responsibilities: Implements approved curriculum to meet the changing needs of infants and toddlers. Is responsible for a small group of children as their primary care provider. Sets up the physical environment which is conducive to infants and toddlers' growth and development. Is responsible for the care, safety, and well-being of all children in the group. Is able to demonstrate orally and by role modeling a sound knowledge of child development. Provides activities, support and information on a continuing basis that will enhance parents' knowledge of child development and the different stages of development. Conducts formal and informal screenings, assessment, and general daily observations of children. Maintains accurate, up to date records and reports. Works cooperatively with co-workers and parents in establishing and implementing individualized activities for children. Serves as a role model at all times for parents, pregnant women and volunteers in the demonstration of appropriate interactions with young children. Conducts parent contacts and home visits in accordance with the program goals and objectives. Assists in transporting EHS children and families as needed. Is responsible for maintaining current CPR, First Aid, TB screening and physicals as required by the program. Assists with the recruitment and registration of program participants. Maintains credentials for working in an Infant and Toddler program. Acquires and maintains Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in good standing. Continues professional development with an emphasis on training related to the Early Head Start Performance Standards and child development milestones. Participates in center based and agency sponsored staff meetings. Supervises and evaluates the performance of the teacher assistant and/or child care providers. Reviews, compiles and reports data related to screenings, assessments, referrals and daily observations. Conducts home visits as required. Participates in local, state and regional training opportunities. Manages all aspects of planning, preparing and operating an EHS classroom. Performs all duties necessary to maintain a quality program for infants, toddlers and pregnant women. Promotes PCA EHS programs in the community. Recruits volunteers for the program and recruits In-kind contributions. Physical Demands Ability to: Stand or sit for extended periods of time. Lift children weighing up to forty-five (45) pounds. Bend at the waist, kneel, or crouch to maintain direct eye contact with children. Sit on the floor and in preschool chairs. Drive an agency vehicle or bus. Walk and/or run quickly. See and demonstrate eye hand dexterity. Expectations and Qualifications: Keep all personal information about children and families confidential. Monitor and supervise parent/child activities. Carry out any other duties as assigned by the EHS Manager/EHS Education Coordinator. Educational Attainment: A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood or a Bachelor's degree in a related field with 18 hours in early childhood. Preferred experience with supervising an assistant. Candidate should be in good health as confirmed by a physician's statement with proof of being free of tuberculosis and fingerprint clearance.
