About the Position
The
City of San Diego Ethics Commission is seeking an
Executive Director . Responsible for the Commission's overall success, the Executive Director is an independent department director who manages a well-established staff of City employees with a shared passion for preserving transparency, accountability, and trust in local government. The position reports to seven volunteer Commissioners. Staff includes three other attorneys, one auditor, and one program manager for training and administration. The position is hybrid: Commission staff works in a downtown San Diego office 2 to 3 days a week and remotely for the rest.
The Executive Director is a highly visible role, representing and speaking on behalf of the Commission at public meetings, to the media, and directly to the public. It is essential for the Executive Director to prioritize and promote integrity, transparency, and accountability at all times. This individual must be driven and independent yet recognize the position's connectivity within a complex and diverse ecosystem of local government, which is continually adapting to meet the needs of its citizens. This position requires an attorney who is comfortable working in litigation and advisory capacities, maintains an apolitical stance, and is unafraid of taking positions that may be unpopular with elected officials. The position requires someone who appreciates the impact of their actions on the long-term well-being of the community.
This position is scheduled to begin work in January 2025, beginning with a three-month overlap period with the current Executive Director. This will provide for a comprehensive training and transition period leading up to the current Executive Director's retirement.
The Commission anticipates hiring the next Executive Director by November 2024, with the appointment required by the City Charter to then be confirmed by a vote of the San Diego City Council.
