Hopkins Marine Station (HMS) is located in Pacific Grove, California. HMS has a 130 year-long tradition as a renowned marine biological station. The research and academic mission of the station supports interdisciplinary teams from multiple departments at Stanford with more than 15 faculty, 30 staff, 20 postdocs, and 40 graduate students on site. As the mission of HMS grows, the station must have parallel growth in its infrastructure. The Hopkins Marine Station Associate Director will lead three vital lines of infrastructure operations: planning and execution of government/community relations; marine operations and safety; and facilities and capital planning. This position will report to the Chair of the Oceans department and take direction from the SDSS Dean's Office.
Your responsibilities will include: Lead the strategic planning and execution for facilities and infrastructure operations at HMS. Manage station programmatic needs, resource allocation, and major and minor facilities projects. Work with faculty, staff, students, and the Pacific Grove community to build out the station's capacity to support growth in its research and academic missions.Oversee execution of HMS government/community relations; marine activities and safety; and facilities management and capital planning. Anticipate and manage the interactions of these critical operational lines.Develop and direct an internal and external outreach strategy and act as the primary representative of HMS. Engage local, regional, and state regulatory and governance bodies. Manage and grow HMS's strategic partnerships with the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Naval Postgraduate School. Develop a local network of key stakeholders that can advance the station's missions.Collaborate with the Stanford Office of Government Affairs and the Land, Buildings, and Real Estate (LBRE) Land Use team to gain approval for facilities improvements and construction projects.Collaborate with faculty and the Stanford Office of Development to tell the HMS story.Analyze existing HMS policies; make revisions and address policy gaps where necessary.Supervise the station facilities manager. Work with LBRE on implementation of the service level agreement and collaborate with LBRE project managers on HMS construction projects.Provide leadership in collaboration with faculty on marine operations and safety to develop the station and its marine fleet in support of world class marine research.Work with the SDSS Director of Facilities and SDSS COO on the development of capital and project budgets for the station. Work with the Oceans Department Director of Finance & Operations on operational budget matters.To be successful in this position, you will need: Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate constituencies which could span multiple organizational boundaries.Demonstrated excellent planning, organizational, and analytical skills.Demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions using good business judgment and innovative and creative problem-solving.Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational, and staff resources.Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to cultivate professional and business partnerships.Strong project planning and management skills.Experience in or knowledge of business process improvement methodology.Ability to act independently and as part of a team.Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a marine station or similar settings.Experience in a university setting working in support of academic and research missions.Experience in government relations.Demonstrated ability to develop trust and build working relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders, such as faculty, staff, students, government officials, and donors.Compensation:
The expected pay range for this position is $173,103 to $217,517 per annum.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
