Job Description Summary Lab Technicians perform quality control inspections and various testing throughout the process to ensure conformance to specifications. This position also coaches team members in other departments to better understand how their actions affect manufacturing a high-quality product.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Collects analytical, microbiological, sensory, raw material receiving, storage areas and any other samples for pre-operation, in-process and finished product testing.Performs statistical calculations relating to test data. Enters test data into the electronic data systems such as Quartz, Excel, and other data management as required. Analyzes test results for trends.Mentor operators, cooks, supervisors and others to help understand how to produce a high-quality product.Prepares media, sterile sampling, equipment and testing supplies.Performs titration testing relating to sanitation chemical concentrations in production areas.Technicians obtain state milk license as required for milk testing.Performs milk and whey (RO) testing in alignment with state regulations. Prepares positive and negative controls for milk regulatory testing.Performs periodic testing relating to sanitation effectiveness in production areas.Performs required tests, compares results against specifications, and provides required test result documentation.Performs periodic chemical and physical testing of samples submitted for sensory, microbiological and/or analytical testing.Performs verification of product, labels and packaging. Verifies correct labels, ease of package opening, package sealing, date and date format, correct product, master cases, legibility of printing, any additional packaging.Distributes employee cheese, first checking for product release. Utilizes Non-conform sheet to maintain and clean out samples from cooler.Maintains all related documents for analytical, Process, sensory, microbiological and any other testing.Conducts ATP and culture swabbing of equipment during pre-operation and operational checks.Conducts air sampling in production areas.Performs weight verification of retail and or final case.Reports results to production and quality management.Conducts rechecks as needed. Assists key in coordination of quality rechecks. Coordinates disposal of rechecks as well.Coordinates calibration and maintenance of laboratory test equipment to ensure proper working order.Coordinates corporate trial retention sampling and conducts testing during trial and sensory retention.Maintains retention schedules for testing and grading as required.Prepares sensory table samples throughout shelf life of product. Conducts sensory testing to include tasting. Prepares documentation and shipment of French and other samples as required.Performs duties based on the lab master sanitation schedule.Provides coverage for all other Technicians within the department.Takes regular inventory of supplies and coordinates weekly supply needs and puts supplies away upon arrival.Handles proper disposal of all waste generated.Places prepared samples on grading table as required.Follows all Safety Rules and procedures by working safely and ensuring safety of others.Follows all clean up and housekeeping procedures. Comply with all quality, safety, and work-rule requirements.Follows all Good Manufacturing Practices as stated within the policy.Follows all food safety procedures.Follows all environmental protocols as applicable to job to prevent pollution to air, land, or water.Follows all sanitation procedures and work instructions.Follows all continuous improvement actions and rules and best practices.Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.Qualifications and Competencies Minimum education and experience required:
Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent. Bachelor's Degree in science-related field preferred.Requires ability to be proficient in SAP and MS Office (Word, Excel, One Note, Outlook, etc).Requires ability to think analytically.Ability to read and understand quality and laboratory procedures.Ability to function as a team member and contribute to group goals.Ability to operate a variety of office, quality and laboratory equipment as required to perform job duties as assigned.Requires good knowledge of quality testing procedures and documentation techniques.Requires good oral and written communication skills.Technical skills in cheese production technologies preferred.Performance Expectations Confidentiality, quality, accuracy, timeliness, reliability, and thoroughness of work performed. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to handle small objects or controls and perform repetitive motions. The employee is required to stand, walk, sit, reach above shoulders, taste, smell, talk, and hear. Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds collecting samples and performing laboratory tests. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. or carry up to 25 lbs.
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
The employee occasionally works in proximity to fumes or air-borne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and in non-weather related extreme cold.
The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
Working Conditions Work is performed largely in a production environment and laboratory. Hours of work will generally be at least 40 hours a week. At times there will be some variation in work hours due to absenteeism, special projects, deadlines and other concerns.
Protective Equipment Employees must wear uniforms, safety glasses, slip resistant safety toe footwear, protective gloves, a hair net, Tyvex apron, and ear protection, and other PPE as required.
