Lab Technician
SUMMARY
Conducts research, analysis, synthesis, and
experimentation on gases, for such purposes as product and process development
and application, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and improvement of
analytical methodologies by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the
following.
Other duties may be assigned.
Assists with developing formulas, processes, and methods for solution of technical problems and testing procedures.
Analyzes gases to test for purity of gas or proper mixture.
Performs research on manufactured products to develop and improve products.
Performs research into composition, structure, properties, relationships, and reactions of matter.
Prepares standards and specifications for processes, products, and tests.
Performs routine maintenance and calibration on analytical equipment.
Calculates, prepares, and fills medical and specialty gas mixtures using partial pressure and gravimetric techniques.
Completes statistical analysis of all testing.
Maintains Cylinder Fill Record program and files.
Maintains and distributes Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS sheets) for each location.
Maintains, cleans, and sterilizes laboratory equipment and instruments.
Prepares Certificates of Conformance and Analysis for specifications of gases according to gas code and distributes as requested.
Orders and inventories materials in order to maintain supplies.
Responsible for quality assurance of products.
Participates in all required safety activities such as meetings, monthly expectations, and safety committee meetings.
Assists with other Specialty Gas department duties when needed.
EDUCATION and/or
EXPERIENCE
Major in Chemistry from four-year college or university;
One to two years related experience and/or training in laboratory environment; or
Equivalent combination of education and experience.
WORK
ENVIRONMENT:
The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock (e.g.
testing equipment).
The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, and explosives (e.g.
gases).
The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud (e.g.
warehouse).
OTHER SKILLS AND
ABILITIES
Ability to work independently as well as with others.
Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Access, Windows, and Business System functions.
Knowledge of analytical testing
equipment and specialty gases.
