Working in partnership with the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern NY (LASNNY), this role is pivotal in promoting justice and equity for LGBTQ+ communities in the Capital Region.
Develop and Distribute Know Your Rights Materials: Create culturally specific legal resources for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Gender Non-Conforming, and Non-Binary (LGBT GNCNB) communities, with a focus on People of Color (POC).
Engage community partnerships to ensure these materials reach those most in need.
Strengthen Relationships with Justice Systems: Build and nurture relationships between IOOV and local courts, law enforcement, and other justice systems.
Advocate to ensure fair treatment and support for LGBT GNCNB individuals.
Collaborate with Community Partners: Work closely with other community organizations to provide culturally competent services.
This includes connecting clients to appropriate legal and social support resources.
Outreach and Advocacy: Conduct proactive outreach to LGBT GNCNB POC communities, raising awareness of their legal and civil rights.
Provide direct support and guidance to help community members navigate their rights.
Support for Survivors: Collaborate with IOOV team members to support clients who are survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
Coordinate safe housing, safety planning, legal counseling, and advocacy services to ensure comprehensive support.
Perform Additional Duties as Needed: Take on other responsibilities as assigned to advance IOOV's mission and provide robust advocacy for the communities served.
Required: Deep commitment to IOOV's mission of equity, justice, and empowerment for LGBTQ+ communities.
At least 2 years of direct experience in human services, particularly in roles involving advocacy or support for marginalized communities.
Proven ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including staff, clients, and volunteers.
Experience handling sensitive issues and building strong, trust-based relationships with community partners.
Strong teamwork skills with a positive, proactive approach to collaborative work environments.
Effective problem-solving skills with the ability to address and resolve challenges thoughtfully.
Reliable transportation with a valid NYS driver's license, proof of auto insurance, and a clean driving record.
At least 1 year of experience working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence, particularly those involved in legal systems.
A 4-year degree in a relevant field is preferred, but equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Exceptional time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
Self-directed with strong advocacy skills and the ability to work independently.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective outreach, reporting, and client support.
Ability to navigate and work with diverse personalities and work styles, maintaining a positive and productive environment.
A solution-oriented mindset with proficiency in data collection, reporting, and analysis to support program development and client advocacy.
Strong problem-solving abilities to identify, address, and resolve issues efficiently.
