NEWSPAPER ADVISOR

QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to organize and supervise a comprehensive middle school news program. Previous experience in teaching or overseeing student-led journalism, broadcasting, or news-related activities. Strong knowledge of journalistic ethics, news production, and relevant media technology.
Must also be open to exploring new trends and methods in student media. Serve as an appropriate role model for students through leadership and guidance in news reporting and media production. REPORTS TO:
The principal, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with school leadership.

SUPERVISES:
Oversees and advises students involved in the production of school news content, including writers, editors, videographers, and other media contributors.

JOB GOAL:
To guide students in developing their skills in reporting, writing, and producing news, while fostering creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
Additionally, the advisor must model and encourage behaviors that promote integrity, self-discipline, and pride in their work.
The advisor is expected to stay current with media trends through conferences, workshops, and professional development.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The success of the school news program plays a role in the school's image.
Public exposure is significant, and there may be community pressure, but maintaining journalistic integrity and encouraging student growth should always remain the priority. This position may require additional time outside the school day, such as for covering events, editing content, or preparing for school-wide announcements. In areas not explicitly covered, the advisor is expected to use common sense and sound judgment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Has thorough knowledge of all school policies related to student media and is responsible for implementing them. Understands school district and state regulations regarding student media and ensures compliance with these policies. Follows proper administrative channels for handling requests, grievances, and student issues.
Participates in public/staff/departmental meetings when necessary. STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES: Establishes the fundamental skills and techniques of news reporting, writing, and broadcasting to be taught to students.
Organizes workshops or meetings to ensure students are informed and prepared. Encourages student growth by facilitating learning opportunities through local conferences, training sessions, or other relevant events. Delegates specific responsibilities to students and assesses the effectiveness of the group at the end of the year. Works to maintain student engagement and morale in the program. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES: Coordinates scheduling for news broadcasts or releases, as well as any equipment needed. Assists in the preparation for events where student media will be involved, ensuring all technical aspects (cameras, microphones, etc.)
are ready. Ensures all necessary media permissions, student safety protocols, and policies are followed. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Serves as a mentor, fostering the development of responsibility, fairness, and ethical journalism in students. Keeps track of student progress in their academic and media-related activities, offering guidance when needed. Ensures students understand the importance of professional conduct when representing the school. Provides opportunities for students to reflect on their performance and consider improvements. FINANCE AND EQUIPMENT: Participates in the budgeting process, ensuring proper funding for media equipment and events. Manages and maintains all media equipment, including cameras, editing software, and other tools necessary for news production. Ensures students respect and care for equipment and spaces used for media production. PUBLIC RELATIONS: Coordinates with parents, staff, and students for special events, such as presentations or performances. Promotes the school news program both within the school and in the wider community. Is responsible for the quality and accuracy of any news releases or communications with local media.
