POSITION SUMMARYThe Professional Tutor for Math/Science must demonstrate an ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate effectively with students and instructors. The Tutor is responsible for providing academic support to all CIA students and assisting the Library Learning Commons (LLC) with accommodating the growing needs of the college, working to assist students with foundational Math, Culinary Math, College Algebra, Calculus and Chemistry. The Tutor will be responsible for auditing coursework to tutor ancillary courses such as Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Finance, Personal Finance, Culinary Chemistry, Microbial Ecology, Science Fundamentals and Biology. They are also responsible for assisting at-risk students to prevent them from probation status and providing services to decrease the overall number of students in academic situations such as at-risk, probation, and academic suspension.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIESTutor students in specific course material and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning to maximize the student's potential for academic progress.Provide individual and small group tutoring sessions in approved subjects.Encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses.Develop a familiarity with computer hardware, software, and any other individual instructional materials available in the Library Learning Commons.Integrate effective study and learning strategies. Participate in professional development offerings.Prepare and update student records and visit notes after each session via the CIA Cares system. Participate in data collection and reporting.Collaborate with managers within the department and instructors to plan appropriate academic support for students.Maintain ongoing communications with the Director – Academic Support Services.Any and all other duties as assigned.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSEducation:
Bachelor's Degree in Math or Science.Experience:
Minimum of three (3) years of teaching or tutoring in Math or Science.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSMaster's Degree.Special training or experience in working with students with disabilities is highly desirable.Familiarity with the operation of developmental education programs.Experience working with ESL students.REQUIRED SKILLSStrong analytical, problem-solving and conceptual skills.Work requires continual attention to detail in composing, typing and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.Must display a high level of energy and self-motivation.Strong computer experience, which must include abilities to work effectively with MS Office suite products, i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint.Ability to work independently or in a team environment and maintain collaborative relationships.WORKING CONDITIONSMust be available to work a flexible work schedule as required due to business needs.Regular work requires the use of a computer, sometimes in excess of eight (8) hours per day.
