Department Summary The Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences is an academic unit within the UCLA Division of Physical Sciences. Position Summary UCLA's Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences invites applications for a scientist or engineer to serve as Instrument Engineer for the Mainzer Research Group at UCLA. Prof. Mainzer is the Principal Investigator (PI) of NASA's Near-Earth Object (NEO) Surveyor mission.The successful candidate will be responsible for helping to ensure that the mission's science requirements are correctly implemented by participating in the design, construction, and testing of the mission's instrument and its integration into the Observatory. Qualifications Two years Design, development, and testing of thermal infrared detector arrays and electro-optical systems is required (Required) Two years design and operation of dewars, cryocoolers, and associated firmware needed for testing thermal infrared detector arrays (Required) Strong laboratory and Python programming skills. (Required) Ability to lead a team of scientists and engineers to translate the science objectives set by the Principal Investigator into verifiable engineering requirements. (Required) Able to represent the interests of the Principal Investigator in technical meetings across the project as the project goes through development and prepares for launch. (Required) Able to provide the Principal Investigator with recommendations on technical approaches that will meet budget and schedule objectives. (Required) Able to assist the Principal Investigator with recruitment and mentoring of other technical professionals. (Required) Able to solicit bids and obtain deliverables from outside vendors for hardware and firmware needed to support detector or instrument testing. (Required) Able to set priorities and manage workflow for other engineers and scientists, resulting in on-time deliveries of hardware, firmware, and software. (Required) Proven record of successful research and strong communications skills.
