Overview:
This cross-functional position is responsible for managing the responsibilities and operations of both Engineering and Product Management departments to meet business unit objectives.
This individual will be accountable for specific engineering functions and a defined portfolio of products to manage within a Business Unit.
They will be accountable for identifying, designing, and managing through the entire product life cycle the highest quality, cost effective products.
This includes responsibilities on the product management side for creating a vision and roadmap for an assigned portfolio of products and supporting day to day activities including inventories, pricing, establishing cost reduction initiatives, and supporting sales to meet agreed upon targets.
This individual must provide vision, direction, good judgment, and a sense of urgency to their staff through leadership, management, and teamwork.
In addition, this individual must have good interpersonal relationship skills, and be capable of leading and motivating a group of people to accomplish the objectives set-up for his/her department.
They are also responsible for staff development.
This individual participates in establishing the objectives of the departments and is responsible for accomplishing those objectives in alignment with the overall strategy of the Business Unit.
Direct supervision of personnel is required as well as managing the activities carried out by contract service firms, vendors, strategic alliances and functions within the company but outside of the business unit.
This individual will be responsible for staffing their departments to meet the needs of current, future, and to-be-defined strategic initiatives.
An understanding of the relationship between the various disciplines within the company required to take a product from concept through manufacturing is essential.


This individual is both responsible and accountable for the development and management of their departmental budgets.

Responsibilities:
Define the technical / engineering expertise and staffing levels and organizational structure required for the successful implementation of all engineering programs Facilitate the role of engineering on cross-functional teams through all phases of the product research, design, engineering development, integration to manufacturing and product release Participate on technical review committees (includes outside the business unit) to ensure design meets product / market: quality, cost, and manufacturing needs and goals Analyze alternate solutions and recommending best options Work with and manage contract service firms where applicable Develop and maintain a Product Family Plan and Roadmap Assess competitive products Achieve sales and profit targets for the Product Family Lead and coordinate all of the assigned Product Managers from an employee and business perspective Identify and help execute acquisitions Develop and manage customer relationships for the purpose of supporting sales of product Provide managerial oversight for forecasts produced for both new and existing products including inventory levels to ensure service Provide managerial oversight for pricing produced for both new and existing products Provide oversight of the design and development of all new products within Product Family Participates actively on the Business Unit Product Approval Committee providing expertise in their functional area while ensuring an overall Business Unit focus Establish priorities and distributing work among the department based on priority, work load and individual skills.
Critically review the skills of all staff Responsibility to improve Product Management and Engineering processes Understanding and updated knowledge of technology and market trends, code requirements Assist senior management in implementing long range strategic plans Responsibility of strategic product NPI plan Create and maintain budget for areas of responsibility Prepare accurate, up-to-date and concise oral and written reports and reviews on departmental progress and direction Qualifications: Strong project management skills Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to clearly articulate plans, influence others, and make sound functional and business decisions Flexible approach to problem solving Critical thinking in the development of recommendations Manage resources directly and indirectly tied to their function Education & Experience: An advanced Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Software or Systems Engineering or other related field, along with a minimum of 15 years of directly related experience MBA highly preferred Experience with commercial lighting controls, RF/Wi-Fi protocols, networking, occupancy sensing technologies Understanding of building manangment systems Experience with software and firmware development and implementation User interface experience a plus Experience in organizational design and change management Able to cultivate and maintain relationships with internal and external resources and customers Able to communicate effectively with customers to define specific product opportunities and associated key product requirements.
Able to coordinate and facilitate discussions between Operations , Supply Chain and the sales regarding all aspects of a product management Experience working within a highly matrixed organization on cross-functional product development projects is required Travel: Up to 30% travel
