Senior Legal Counsel (Payments)

The role: You will serve as a payments subject matter expert and primarily support our North America Global Expansion and Payment Partnerships team, including other aspects of the business tasked with ensuring legal and regulatory compliance in all aspects of our payments services.
This role reports to the Global Head of Legal

You will be required to advise on complex legal and regulatory payments issues while balancing local and global perspectives and cultural differences and nuances.

Roles and responsibilities, include but are not limited to:
Deliver clear and practical legal support on the launch of new payment products.
Effective and compliant maintenance of existing payment products and services offered across North America.
Monitor state and federal payments regulatory issues and matters that apply to our business services.
Provide legal and regulatory support on global payment initiatives, partnerships and related commercial agreements.
Manage and direct outside counsel in various jurisdictions in connection with strategic business priorities.
Be adept in making sensible legal risk assessments which consider and implement practical solutions to business priorities.
Serve as an active champion of Flutterwave's mission, ethics and integrity.
Collaborate well with the broader legal team on various other general and strategic legal matters.
Your Expertise: Juris Doctor degree and an active license in at least one relevant jurisdiction.
9+ years of experience, with a minimum of three years with a leading law firm in your jurisdiction.
In-house payments experience with an e-commerce marketplace, Fintech or payments service provider preferred.
Strong understanding of the payments regulatory environment and principle, familiarity with key legislation, with significant experience advising on cross-border and multi-jurisdictional regulatory issues.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to make complex regulatory concepts clear to colleagues and regulators.
Self-starter, driven and able to work autonomously while prioritizing competing tasks in a highly dynamic environment.
Ability to spot key risks, analyze and practically assess risk, and provide business-oriented and actionable recommendations.
Flexibility, highly collaborative and willingness to work with all levels of the organization to get the job done.
Intellectually curious, open-minded, adaptable and receptive to feedback.
Entrepreneurial and business solution orientated.
High integrity, good judgment, a sense of humor and a genuine enthusiasm for the work.

Location: New York

Salary Range: $84,000 - $111,000 per year

Compensation is commensurate with experience and industry standards
