Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband network connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.
As a Software Development Manager (SDM) you will be responsible for owning the team's roadmap and ensuring the strategic vision is executed. You will be responsible for gathering customer requirements, project prioritization, software quality, and system delivery. You will help mentor, develop, and guide the engineers responsible for the system development.
As a SDM, you will lead and work with a talented team to innovate and deliver distributed software systems that enable Project Kuiper to operate and manage our satellite constellation and ground stations. You will work with engineering teams across ground and space systems to understand how the system functions and deliver an integrated solution to support successful functioning of the satellite constellation, and several supporting teams. They depend on us to have mission-critical reliability, uptime, and performance.
The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, an excellent communicator, have strong organizational skills, able to work independently, can juggle multiple tasks at once, and ensure deliverables meet requirements and deadlines. You should have strong knowledge of software engineering practices, and enjoy mentoring and developing the engineers that work on your team.
Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Key Job ResponsibilitiesBuild, lead and manage a diverse team of engineers.Provide technical guidance for the team in addressing projects with broad scope and limited definition to ensure test and design objectives are met.Define team growth expectations and organization strategy.Coordinate internal and external resources to ensure team and project success.Communicate fluidly across a variety of teams to identify product risks and how they will be addressed to ensure mission success.Juggle multiple priorities while optimizing the system and schedule.Apply critical thinking in complex situations, ambiguous environments and aggressive timelines.BASIC QUALIFICATIONS3+ years of engineering team management experience.7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience.3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience.Experience partnering with product or program management teams.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations.Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy.Experience delivering products against plan in a fast-paced, multi-disciplined, distributed-responsibility and often ambiguous environment.Prior experience in creating ground software for space missions.Amazon is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace.
