We're seeking a future team member for the role of Sr Director, Managing Counsel This role is located in Boston, Lake Mary or Pittsburgh- Hybrid
This is an important and new role within the legal team supporting BNY Investments. It involves leading the provision of legal advice and support to several of BNY Investments' affiliated investment firms and their related international businesses.In particular, the attorney will serve as the lead attorney for BNY Advisors, Inc., a registered investment adviser that provides, among other services, OCIO (discretionary) / OIO (non-discretionary) services and customized portfolio management in support of endowments, foundations, retirement plans, family offices, governments and financial intermediaries. This attorney will also have day-to-day responsibility for leading the team of attorneys supporting Newton Investment Management, Walter Scott & Partners and Mellon Investments.
This attorney will be part of a larger team of legal professionals in support BNY Investment's other investment management affiliates and related businesses globally. The ideal candidate will have a significant working knowledge of laws and regulations in the field of investment management and experience in leading high-performing teams.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
Leading the provision of legal support to BNY Advisors and managing the legal team supporting several of BNY's other investment firms.
Managing and advising on varied and potentially complex legal and regulatory matters relating to the provision of investment advisory services.
Managing the negotiation and drafting of OCIO/OIO agreements and other investment advisory agreements with clients.
Leading discussions with senior management and attendance on various senior management committees.
Facilitate engagement with Compliance teams in interpreting and applying investment advisory rules, as well as international regulations, to the business; and in creating the investment firms'policies and procedures.
Serve as a key point person for the Legal Department on complex and significant initiatives.
Lead in providing proactive and pragmatic advice and guidance in the development of new product/service initiatives.
To be successful in this role, we're seeking the following:
JD and licensed to practice in NY, MA or PA.
12+ years of relevant experience.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to lead a team of high-performing legal professionals including managing performance assessments, development and underperformance, pastoral skills and an ability to deal sensitively with difficult or stressful situations. Experience in developing best practice to positively impact the performance of the team.
Strong written and oral communication skills. A clear communicator that is able to deliver legal advice in layman's terms and lead discussions with senior leadership.
Ability to interact and establish strong relationships with senior decision makers and with individuals and groups across all levels of the wider BNY group.
Significant experience in dealing with RIAs with good technical skills including sound knowledge of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 and related SEC rules/regulation applicable to RIAs.
Ability to deal with a varied workload in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to manage and prioritize across a large volume of complex matters with competing deadlines and different internal stakeholders.
Experience in overseeing/leading on complex strategic programs and regulatory change initiatives and acting as the key point of contact. Ability to manage cross-border matters involving multiple jurisdictions.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. The individual should be pragmatic and someone who looks for solutions rather than obstacles. The legal team is seen as a business partner and the successful candidate will be comfortable relating to and dealing with business colleagues as the role will involve frequent interaction with business colleagues.
Ability to identify and manage legal risks and good judgement in consulting with and escalating risk issues appropriately.
A team player. The ability to work harmoniously and responsively with one's colleagues and clients is an essential pre-requisite for the role.
