Assistant Greenskeeper Starting Hourly Rate: $21.65
Work Schedule: Holiday, weekends, early morning and late evening hours are a necessary part of the work schedule for this position. Normally the work schedule will be for 5-6 days a week, averaging 37-40 hours a week.
Responsible for all aspects of managing the maintenance operations for the City of Ann Arbor's golf courses, while the Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent (GCMS) is not onsite.
Main Duties are to serve as a crew leader overseeing the staff responsible for the daily duties including, mowing; changing cups; watering; irrigation up-keep and repair; overall grounds clean up; general course repair and up-keep; identification and diagnosis of Turf Disease and pest infestations; preventative maintenance and repair of golf course machinery.
In the absence of the GCMS, additional responsibilities will include:
Apply agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the maintenance standards and long-range goals that are developed between the GCMS and the Director of Golf. Schedule, monitor, track and implement fertilization and chemical applications to ensure optimal turf health and growing conditions. Maintain records of types, amounts and frequency of all applications. Provide professional advice, counsel, to the Director of Golf with regards to planning and improvement for the golf course as well as the landscaping and maintenance around the clubhouses. Communicate with crewmembers in all types of situations and circumstances while they are working under equipment, behind doors, in trenches, etc. Maintain and adjust equipment, as needed. Listen for warning signals on equipment and from the golf course. Keep accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, employee training, pesticide applications, etc. Work to create an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communications and respect for themselves, residents, golfers and the course in which they work. Manage and oversee any construction and or reconstruction of the courses, whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors. Inventory and replenish all needed supplies, parts and equipment to accomplish all of the other goals listed above, while staying within budgeted parameters. Handling of herbicides, fungicides, pesticides and gasoline on a daily basis. Establish and maintain a safe working environment. Required Qualifications :
Ability to follow and give oral and written communication. Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment including highly specialized turf equipment, pickup trucks, plows, small hand tools, tractors, mowers dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, brush chipper, chainsaw, sprayer, spreader, digger, grinder, drill press, jack and computers. Must have current pesticide applicator license Must obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certification within 30 days of employment. The
City offers CPR/AED and First Aid classes, which are free to Parks employees. Please
note, your certification must be from an organization that has been approved by the
Bureau of Community and Health Systems, Child Care Licensing Division. Please see

link for list of approved organizations. Valid driver's license At least six years of Golf Course Maintenance Supervisory experience Good knowledge of the game of golf. Required to do heavy work exerting up to 100 lbs of force occasionally, and /or up to 50 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects. Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous materials (chemicals, blood and other bodily fluids, etc.) and extreme temperatures.
