The Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity (URSCA) in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Research Administration and Student Mentorship. The duration of the Fellowship is 15 months (May 2024-August 2025).
The URSCA office manages selection, advising, and programming for a variety of undergraduate research grants and fellowships for Hopkins students; runs a national undergraduate humanities research symposium; publishes an undergraduate humanities research journal; and oversees several national summer research programs for visiting students. We seek a creative, flexible, and organized individual to support our work in all of these areas, including student research project mentorship, curriculum development, instructional support, editing and publishing, project management, and assessment of programmatic outcomes.
The Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow will benefit from tested mentorship, and grow their skills in program design, culturally responsive teaching, interinstitutional awareness, and student mentoring. Our office is highly interdisciplinary and cooperative, and the fellow will gain experience working with Hopkins students across disciplines; community college, HBCU, and MSI students in the humanities and social sciences; and KSAS faculty, staff, and leadership. Further, the postdoc may bring their research expertise to our ongoing study of the outcomes and impacts of the Mellon Humanities Collaboratory, and may contribute to a publication.
The fellowship begins in May 2024, and is 15 months, ending in August 2025. It carries an annual salary of $55,000 (so, $68,700 for the 15 months) and provides eligibility to participate in the Johns Hopkins University health insurance plans. Eligibility requirements are detailed on the application, but it is important to note that the selected fellow must defend their humanities or humanistic social science project by May 1, 2024.
Core ResponsibilitiesProvide guidance and advising to students on research practices, project design and organization, and goal setting.Assist with scheduling and program planning.Advise fellowship and grant applicants in all application processes.Conduct information sessions and workshops.Collaborate with other programs, offices, and departments at Hopkins to support students and accomplish program objectives.Assist the Director of Undergraduate Research in coordinating the recruitment and selection process for undergraduate research students and program participants.Develop and implement meaningful programming for student researchers and participants within each program and across programs.Implement assessment tools to evaluate programmatic outcomes.Teach any required workshops, seminars, or other programming as required.Chaperone and support student events, excursions, and other activities.Coordinate professional development opportunities for undergraduate researchers and visiting students.Other duties as assigned.QualificationsWe seek an outstanding individual with a recent Ph.D. in a humanities field, to include history, history of art, history of science or medicine, languages and literatures, media studies, philosophy, classics, religious studies, or humanities tracks within interdisciplinary programs (e.g., Africana studies, East Asian studies, gender studies, etc.). Candidates for the fellowship should be committed to promoting undergraduate research through teaching, mentorship, and administrative support. The office particularly values experiences and ambitions related to improving equity, diversity, and inclusion in the undergraduate research space. Experience working with first-generation and/or community college students is highly desired.
